Yeah, the Venice box is the one that's getting new guts. i7-2600k can handle bigadv, right?warriorpoet wrote:Well, if it matters, I'm pretty sure that Venice will run SMP alright, but I don't think bigadv are going to do so well

Re: 100,000 Point Club
Thanks, frenchie and warriorpoet. Is it just me, or does anyone else find that their hardware decisions are influenced (crazily) by Folding? I just built a new machine to replace my main office PC. I was planning to turn the old box into a low-powered file server or something (really I was), but now...

Re: My i5 build - Fan set up advice?
Unless your ambient temps are really high, I agree you don't need five fans. I'm running a similar i5 system on two and my core temps are great...low-to-mid-fifties at 100% load, with the fans running around 700 rpm. I've got a PWM Slipstream on a Gelid Tranquillo CPU cooler blowing toward the back,...

Hey, another new folder on the team, only a couple weeks and hits 100k, it's.... cmh!!!! Short and sweet! Just started folding and already number 9 in production, very nice! Great work, keep on folding! :D :D Thanks! Good to be here. Folding is fun. SPCR provided a lot of the design and component i...

Re: looking to make my current system quieter
What are your CPU and GPU temps at idle and full load? If you've got some headroom on temps, you might start by slowing down your fans and seeing where that leaves you...

Re: New Build: P183, i5-2500K
Speedfan. I'm trying to get the same thing going using the BIOS, but without much luck so far. The fans basically stay at whatever minimum speed I set and don't react to temps. When the CPU temp gets above the target value I set in the BIOS, the motherboard cuts the CPU voltage for a few seconds. T...

Re: New Build: P183, i5-2500K
Nice build. Very nice, clean build. Well done. Thanks! Btw how are you controlling the Slipstreams PWM, only via intel bios? or with speedfan? Speedfan. I'm trying to get the same thing going using the BIOS, but without much luck so far. The fans basically stay at whatever minimum speed I set and d...

New Build: P183, i5-2500K
Six years after my first SPCR-influenced build (an Athlon 64), I'm back at it again. My goal was to build something that was inaudible while I'm sitting at my desk, powerful (for Adobe Creative Suite), and less than $1,000. I'm not much of a gamer, so I decided to use the integrated graphics on a Sa...

Re: Fan Control on Sandy Bridge/Fractal R3 system
@cmh, I like the Asus fan control, two PCI-e, and overclocking stability, but the main reason I like the z68 is that it has been well tested in DAW applications. The board is very low noise and can be dialed down to very low DPC latency. Since there are not a lot of info on other boards, I am leani...

Re: Fan Control on Sandy Bridge/Fractal R3 system
For a mobo, what about the Intel DZ68DB? Three four-pin PWM fan headers (CPU plus front and rear chassis fans), three PCI slots, and $40 less than the basic Asus Z68? Just an idea...

You might want to consider the 430W S12. The issue isn't the total capacity of the PSU...it's the current carried on the 12V rail. You want at least 24A combined, and the S12 380 just makes it at 25 (10+15). The 430W model carries 29A (14 + 15). Check out the instability complaints on the abit forum...

Looks like your advice was good, Mats. There was a BIOS update for the board that adds Rev. E processor support. Somehow, I didn't find it on my own and the ABIT automatic BIOS flash gadget didn't know about it either. Found a link in the forums, flashed it, and have been running much smoother since...

Well, I was going to save it for the "issues" post, but since you asked, Mats... This machine isn't Prime95 stable at *any* speed and/or voltage, including the stock 1800/1.4. It works great in terms of use, but it's never made it more than 6 hours on the blended torture test. I don't know if I need...

First build: Venice, AX8, Spinpoint, Freezer64, 3000B, S12
Here's a writeup of my new PC, the first I've built. It's all straight from the SPCR playbook. It's basically a success, but it's got some issues I'll address in a later post. If another newbie can avoid some aggravation by reading that, maybe I'll begin to repay SPCR for all the help I got here. Th...

3000B and Freezer 64?
I've got an Antec SLK3000B case and am considering an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 to cool my A64 Winchester 3000+. It looks to me like the Freezer's fan will be blowing perpendicular to airflow from the case's CPU duct. Would I get a much bigger cooling benefit from going with something that will blow...
