Whet1134 Fortron 300W that Newegg.com has for 27.00 The price is hard to beat, but Seasonics Tornado ($65) should perform even better. (but I think you'd better wait a few weeks until you buy one: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=7105 sockeye 25dBA isn't twice as loud as 14dBA: the s...

I once replaced the fan of an orb-style HSF (I'd rather forget it). Initially I took a smaller fan that fitted inside the (slightly bent) fins. But later I cut out the frame of a larger fan and glued it at the bottom of the HS. Cooling performance was marginally reduced, but the noise level went dow...

Zhentar, don't know if it really helps but a friend of mine returned his MOBO to QDI for a modification (he got wrong temperature readings from the CPU-diode). Once he got it back, it wouldn't POST at 133MHz, only at 100MHz. I tested both CPU (Palomino) and RAM in my system, and they all worked well...

Nay, I think you'd better replace the case fan. It shouldn't be that hard to make your PSU the loudest component. Running the CPU without a fan usually requires a bit more attention to airflow and in some cases other components. (even if it is a low power CPU by today's standards) You could also rep...

Bought a 8412NGL a year ago and was extremely impressed with it's performance/noise ratio. So I bought another one and guess what: CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK.....I can't use it :? Still happy with the first one though. During the same period I also bought five 4412NGL, and they all worked very well (at...

IMO, cooling parts that don't need extra cooling (like the VRM) is usually a waste of time (and noise). If your Vcore is stable then everything is ok! Unlike your CPU, MOSFET’s are designed to operate at high temperatures. Maximum junction temp: 120-150'C! It's just a piece of silicon and plastic an...

1. Undervolt (0.05-0.15V gives you a ~5-10'C temp drop at full load ) 2. Turn the fan to suck air from the HS. (loose ~3'C in some systems) 3. Remember, 57'C isn't that bad if you are pleased with the noise level. Spec says 85'C. Real world apps will always load your CPU less. The Volcano 7+ is clea...

Great source bluehat! Just to clarify: Don't mix up segments and VID-bits Cutting the fifth bridge-segment (VID4) lowers the voltage by 0.4V, and cutting the fourth segment (VID3) lowers the voltage by 0.2V. If you are familiar with a solder iron, I would recommend a reversible operation: unsolder p...

I promised myself to leave this review behind me, but obviously I couldn't. New things just keep popping up: *Since when do Athlon MB's use the 3.3V rail to produce Vcore? (it's either 5V or (not so often) 12V) *The heatsinks of PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 475 reached 25.8'C under load , which mean...

Linear regulator? I'm thinking of an a big transformer and big heatsinks in a box at least as big as an ITX PC? Excellent project idea, but perhaps too exotic to become a commercial success. I once (actually it was only a few months ago) tried to run a PC from external fanless (switched) power suppl...

So, basically what they are saying is that current EMC regulations aren't enough to guarantee DRAM data retention? MemTest is really a worst-case test - no computer will never ever (talking about real world applications) have it's memory filled with a single bit high and it's complement, alternated ...

I think mdhare meant internal PSU temps. How did you measure the CPU temp? If your external CPU temp probe is attached to a wire and not soldered to the BM, try to relocate it to the heatsinks or a coil inside the PSU (use isolated parts!). Or buy a new one if your MB support reading from external t...

My barracuda V (ATA) 120G(8M) is installed in a 3.5" bay with rubber
grommets. Idle temp is 34'C (MB:27'C). The case is cooled by one
120mm fan in the bottom of the case (the case hangs under the desk)
and one in the rear, both running at 700rpm (~5.5v).
Maybe you should consider a front intake fan?
