Tips for selecting RAM in 2018

While not directly related to silence, it is a decision builders (and buyers) will make, especially within the context of the CPU and motherboard they choose, so I wanted to give tips for beginners, or those who haven't built a PC in several years: CPU choice All RAM does is allow your computer to r...

Re: Best choices for Graphics card in a laptop for video edi

For video editing, a good GPU helps but the CPU is far more important.

A laptop with a mobile version of the GTX 1050 (or GTX 1060) should be plenty as long as it has a great CPU.

Ethernet vs. Powerline vs. Wifi Adapter

This is how I would rank the speed and stability of these connections. 1. Ethernet (by far the best option, though it's not feasible for all pc builds) 2. Good Powerline signal (which often depends on the electrical engineering of the building, it offers near-ethernet speed) 3. PCI-E Wifi Adapter 4....

You may not need as much wattage as you think.

Website wattage calculators err on the side of caution, to a somewhat extreme degree sometimes. Also, some enthusiasts make recommendations on the basis that the GPU (and GPU) would be overclocked to the highest possible maximum, when most people don't do that. A build without a video card most like...

Re: AMD Ryzen APUs (Raven Ridge)

2200G is a great addition to the budget market. It allows Ryzen to be a part of entry-level PC's without a video card being needed. Compared to the i3-8100, the CPU capability is slightly less but the integrated graphics are much better (though not the level of a dedicated video card). At $100, 2200...

Re: Micro ATX Case Comparison

Hello all, I am very interested in this topic. I want to build an mATX PC as most silent as possible, but i think ATX cases are too big. How well is Fractal Design Define Mini C in terms of noise? I can't find any review which talks specifically about the noise of this case. Best regards, I use the...

NVMe offers much superior specs on paper, but in terms of real-world benefits, NVMe may not be worth the extra cost for many builders out there.

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini C question

My build uses the Mini C. I took the drive cage out and I keep the drives on the right side mounted to the wall. This is just personal preference. The Mini C is a very good case overall. Two small criticisms. 1) It's fairly large for a case that's marketed as mini. 2) The power supply shroud worsens...

Tips for buying a SSD in 2018

A SSD is strongly recommended for boosting operating system and application speed and performance for just about any computer user. For many, it could have more real-world impact and workflow improvement than having a high-end CPU. Between buying a SSD or a hard drive first, SSD may be preferable fi...

Re: GTX 1070 Ti Review Compilation Thread

At the moment, the 1070 Ti seems to benchmark very closely to (if not slightly better than in some cases) the 1080. At MSRP prices, the 1070 Ti is the better deal, but with volatile GPU prices at the moment, things may be different.

Re: How many case fans do I really need?

Only considering cooling performance, an intake and exhaust fan (2 fans) is the minimum recommendation and the best bang-for-buck. As more fans are added, there are diminishing returns. Although, 3-4 fans may help if you're going for more fans and slower fan speeds.

I think a CPU Cooler with a fan at the slowest speed, all things considered, is better than no fan at all.

Numerous builds with fans have still been deemed silent by SPCR's standards.

Re: Old desktop - new build, simple upgrade or nothing?

If it's working fine, then keep using it. If not, then Keep your power supply and Sell your other parts. A 10 year old PC is really pushing it. At some point, you'd be spending more upgrading it than it's worth.

Re: Quiet PC build - suggestions

The 8700k seems to be more powerful than the Ryzen 7, but it will also cost $100 more. If you have the money and want the best processor you can get, go for it. But if you feel like your other parts are being compromised by your budget, you may be better off using that money to improve other aspects...

Re: ASRock DeskMini 110 Mini STX with i7-7700 (TINY!)

This build looks perfect honestly. The entire PC appears to be the size of just one ATX power supply. Perfect choice for processor, cooler, RAM, storage for a high-end non-graphical build. Those on a budget could go for 8GB RAM, a Pure Wings 2 fan, an i5-7400 and 250 GB storage to shave off ~$250 wi...

More mid-high end options is a good thing in this market right now. It would be nice for a new release to push down prices of older releases. However, I'm not sure where to the 1070 Ti will fit in. It's no more energy efficient than the 1080. And if it is priced too high, people will just spend a bi...

Re: HELP - Almost deadly silent setup for audio home-recordi

Your CPU, RAM, Cooler, Case and Storage are ideal choices.

A 370 motherboard may be excessive for a recording studio. A 350 is probably plenty.

3GB 1060 is a good choice for price to performance. My Asus version of the fan has software that can put it to Silent Mode.

Re: Quiet PC build - suggestions

Ryzen 7 1700 is your best bet.

Any SSD from a reliable company (Samsung, Hynix, Kingston, Intel, Crucial, etc) is fine.

You should try out 16 GB RAM and see how it works before spending $150 more on 32 GB.

Re: [Case] Fractal Design Define Mini C (Micro ATX) Review

Thanks for the review. Although I wonder if having the drive cage is even necessary if there's only one 3.5" HDD. Regarding the PSU shroud ventilation for the PSU: if the PSU fan faces down for air intake, I think it's better that the vent holes be covered to create a tunnel-like effect for better ...
