Yeah, that's the main reason I freecycled my lovely little Antec Aria -- the PSU drew 20W when connected only to the wall -- and not even a motherboard! That had to go. It's little comfort that it idled at like 38W and maxed out at 60, since I knew that 30-50% of that were basically heating t...

Glad you like it. What is the typical efficiency of a wall wart? I can't say. It's a bit difficult to do, but you can actually get the efficiency for your wall wart. First you read the power draw as described above; then you need to place the kill-a-watt between the wart and the device, that is, rou...

My advice: start with the old, if you need to buy something new then make sure it can be re-used in a more modern pc. If the old stuff turns out to be too slow or whatever, buy new and use any old-new parts you may have bought. That, at least, keeps the e-waste to a minimum ... but it does require y...

Thermalright are nice folks
I wrote directly to Thermalright to ask if they'll sell me one directly. With your help, I found a not-so-local dealer before I received their reply. Dust has a tendency to stay put, you need to place a pulling (sucking) fan *very* near dust build-up to actually move it that way -- that is, if the PSU is sitting in the dust but has its fan facing upward, I don't expect it to pick up any of the dust it's sitting in. Compressed air won't make dust ...

Scythe Ninja vs. Thermalright HR-01 ?
Hi, I'll be putting an Intel E8500 on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R in an Antec P182, and I wanted to cool it with a Thermalright HR-01. But now it's been TWO friggin' MONTHS since I ordered the cooler at what seems to be the only Danish reseller, but they've kept postponing the thing by a week again and ...

The PSU itself is not going to care which way you mount it. So do what's best in terms of case openings, screw holes, cable positions, et cetera. However, depending on what the orientation does to your general case airflow, it may have an impact on other components. Also, if you're into tight cable ...

Okay so you've defined "silent" to mean "rather quiet". Now please define "pc". The smallest motherboard would be something in the mini-ATX (mATX) class, a VIA EPIA M10000 for instance, which I've used for a while (but is now no longer modern). Gigabyte: GA-EP43-DS3R vs. GA-EP45-DS3R (43 vs 45)?
Hi, wouldn't you know it, after a month of delaying my supplier finally admitted that they can no longer ship the GA-EP4 3 -DS3R which I ordered for my new pc -- they can only ship the GA-EP4 5 -DS3R . Re: A delicate question
Is being captured by your enemy, being tortured, physically and possibly mentally, and confessing to the transgressions of your country a reason to be referred to as a war hero? Shouldn't a hero have to perform something "heroic"? While I never gave it any thought until I saw it worded that way, up...

Re: 3.5" vs. 2.5" for HTPC
Am I correct in thinking that a laptop drive will be more silent than a desktop drive? Well, depends. Generally the clickety-clackety seeking sounds are softer in the smaller drives (because the moving parts are obviously smaller), but the overall drive noise is not necessarily lower. Some are, som...
