The best would be to go passive if you can, especially for such a relatively low power card (no extra power connector, right?). It seems that it has the same hole pattern as the 6800/7800/7900 series cards, but the RAM layout is different (so no NV Silencer 5). Apparantly you can use 6600GT coolers ...

Motherboard makers should make all motherboards passive, it's obviously not impossible (or even very hard), and it means more silence and more reliability. Uh, you think running electrical components at higher operating temps improves reliability? Au contraire. What he means is most cheap high-spee...

Still no dust filter though! I agree that ducted positive pressure works really well, have a look at my pc (in the sig), that's basically what I have done, except the intake is at the front, which is less good from a noise perspective. I can also turn my intake fan down really low (subjectivl...

Well, with the amount of fans you have in your case, it might make sense to go for some more low airflow/low noise fans like the Nexus. I think the sonic tower should be more than enough for a 3000+, I think you could even get rid of the fan "inside" it (perhaps to some ducting to the back of the ca...

Well yes, it has been discussed in the past, but I've noticed many different requests for passive or "silent" motherboards recently, there's even a thread near the top of the forum right now. I think a couple of reasons could be that on many motherboards the northbridge is under the end of the grap...

You can use one of the zalman coolers, or else the Arctic Cooling NV Sîlencer 5, provided you cut a couple of centimeters off the plastic duct (See here scroll down a bit). Replacing your gfx fan normally voids your warranty (except for eVGA cards IIRC), but you actually don't risk much, if you can...

I don't think there are any reviews that compare motherboards VRM efficiency and overall power consumption, a small sample here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/03/02/ati_crossfire_xpress_3200_chipset_takes_off/page24.html It says that the A8R-MVP is good for a modern motherboard, but VIA chipsets ...

In the Turion64 on the desktop arcticle on SPCR, it's written: Here's an open secret: The Turion 64 is based on the same AMD64 architecture that powers AMD's desktop and server processors. I'd worry about warranty being honored if you had problems once you brought it back. that's almost guaranteed - if there are problems with the screen you will have major problems/arguments getting support or returning it. If you take the risk and it all works out then great, otherwise get ready for...

First of all, Welcome to SPCR Second, in general SFF systems are hard to get silent because of the small volume of air, the small amount of space to put huge fansinks, and the usual position of these machines. Looking through the SFF Systems Section of SPCR, the first thing that comes up is the 17" ...

Once again a great creative airflow path... The downside though, is that all sides of this case have some sort of intake/exhaust, which might be ok for those of you in the US with a huge living room and a huge A/V rack with lots of space, but for those that are tight on space this could be a problem...

Ground wire sounds like the solution, the mobo makers probably expect the case to be grounded and use the mobo standoffs as grounds aswell... I've heard of problems in certain mini-itx mods that used a non metallic case, people had to ground one of the standoffs. You might have a similar problem, al...

You can also use styrene, as recently mentioned in the Quiet and OC Pentium D arcticle, and originally mentioned here . Do fans/PSU's have a warm-up time?
I recently dug up my Lego RCX, and installed BrickOS on it, which allows me to make much more powerful programs for it (in C). I was fooling around when I remembered that I had told somebody that was looking for a way to measure a fan's rpm that they could use a RCX for this, so I decided to try it ...

I have experimented before with airflow behind the MB....that area does get warm. It'll measure 45C+ in places. You can easily lower your CPU temp 3C with a small airflow back there. How about using an aluminium case, and getting some of those zalman standoffs that come with their TNN, that could p...

It's case airflow concept time! The mid fan idea is good, but I think the muffler on the intake is useless, the first place to put a muffler is on the output. I would vote for a filter in that stage instead. Also, unless you're using a laptop cpu, or a very low power desktop one, you might have a he...

Pretty innovative idea, although I suppose that it will have a lot of backpressure on the PSU, won't that make the fan ramp up to fight the pressure? Also dust could enter the PSU when it's off (since it's facing upwards), and sound is sent more directly to the user aswell. My real question is, is h...

S3 sleep mode does exactly this, it works seemingly perfectly with a computer I built recently: ASRock 939DualSATA2 (AMD64), Antec Smartpower 2.0 PSU and Windows 2000 SP4. All that needed to be done is to choose S3 only in the bios, and set the jumper to +5VSB for the USB stuff. When sleeping every ...
