Re: Quiet Fan Upgrade for Athlon 64
Most of your current hardware is fine. You might consider using low speed Slipstreams instead of the S-Flex's as an alternative. What you are proposing to do is build a positive pressure system, which is fine, give a few caveats. You are forcing cool air to specific spots instead of removing hot air...

Re: HTPC
Simply put, an HTPC is just a PC connected to a monitor/TV/HDTV that is used primarily for media playback. Everything else is optional: 10ft display (like Windows Media Center), IR remotes, and the like are not difficult to configure. I can't comment on the case you mention, never heard of it. Looks...

I have the same hardware with only 4GB ram, a PII x3 740BE (unlocked 4th core and OC'd to 3.2GHz), and a different case/psu.
Crysis plays maxed out without even a stutter. I think you have driver issues.

Re: My screen resolution is blurry always.Graphics card prob
So VGA cables have bad mojo? I've seen the problem feeding an analog signal to a LCD can create. There are test images you can use to detect it (more often than not, feeding an analog signal to an LCD with a modest resolution will result in a picture that looks perfect at first glance). There's no ...

Can't speak to that specific CPU, but I'm running a Phenom II X3 740 (unlocked to X4 @ 3.2GHz) with a Mugen 2 passively in my Antec 300. Top fan undervolted to 5V and rear fan replaced with a 800rpm Slipstream. I can't imagine one fan not being enough, unless you are going nuts. Stock HSF only come ...

Did you guys happen to try this card out in Crysis? I bought this card and every game except Crysis runs at high settings. Crysis "optimized" by the game asks for High settings but runs @ 10 FPS. On medium settings it does 12 fps, on low settings it does 10 FPS. I'm running a phenom 2 965be @ 3.8gh...

Yes, it can be the PSU, it can be components on your video card, and even the monitor. Usually, it's on pages or screens with lots of white content. All I can say is that if it's the monitor, make sure it's up to the highest brightness level. Also, if you monitor is a CRT, you'll have to get used to...

Re: My screen resolution is blurry always.Graphics card prob
It should also be noted I use an adapter as the screen is different to the card's output. If either of them is VGA, then that is the problem. Agreed, most VGA connected LCDs suffer from either blurriness or ghosting. If you're running that hardware with an EVGA monitor, it's time for an upgrade. Hi...

Re: DirectCU (1 fan) vs. Windforce (2 fans)
My Asus EAH6850 pretty much stays at 1650rpms. You really can't hear it from 1m. As you get closer, you can hear some buzzing, due to it's small size and clear plastic nature. Overall though, the cooler does such a good job that it's unlikely to ever get loud. It's well built and more efficient than...

Re: Best Budget Silent CPU Cooler?
Calling the Freeze 7 pro quiet is like calling vacuum cleaner quiet it's annoying and extremely loud 92mm @ 2500 rpm. You won't get better then Coolermaster 212+ on a budget stick to it OP. Any fan at 2500rpm is not quiet. I've had a Freezer 7 on my X2 4850e in an HTPC configuration and now in a WH...

Re: Please help me decide on a case and heatsinks.
Well, given that quiet is your primary goal, you can likely do away with the two fans on the Megahalems.
I'd go with the P183, personally, but to each his own.

Re: Dumb disk questions: HDD speed for video
1. Only if using small frequently used files. Cache will be mostly useless in sequential disk accesses, which video editing will be. 2. You can edit video with whatever you want, but the slower the disk the slower the process. 3. Some 7,200rpm drives are rather quiet compared to older drives, but no...

Re: Wireless keyboard/mouse combo for HTPC
Definitely stay away from Bluetooth, particularly for gaming. Input lag is real...and it sucks. Not to mention that unless you use the included dongle, many mouse/keyboard combos don't work properly in a Pre-OS environment (not able to enter BIOS, etc). I like Logitech's unified receiver sets, if yo...

Re: Best Budget Silent CPU Cooler?
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro can be had for real cheap. Works well with low power CPUs.
Not exactly easy to replace the fan (92mm), but the stock one is pretty quiet and is decoupled.
If you need a bigger cooler, Xigmatek has some good options, like the S1284 in the 20euro range.

I had orginal Al-cu 7000 and now CNPS-10X quiet both had very good quality and price worth the performance you were getting (especially if you factor in STG-2 bundled to every CNPS). And unlike Scythe they don't use shitty little plastic pins for mounting on s.775 but proper metal brackets and scre...

Re: Zalman not giving up on the "flower" heatsinks
Clear fans are brittle and generally have a harshness to the tone, regardless of the speed. Zalman's fans have always been a little buzzy to begin with. Either way, you're better off with a Scythe Mugen or something similar. You'll pay less, get better cooling, and have the option of replacing the f...

Re: Need heatsink recommendations - new WHS build
I would recommend against SSD's for a WHS OS drive. I know a lot of people at WGS like them, but the speed increase won't be noticeable in most instances, and with the tombstone system of pooled storage, it's likely to tax the balancing system of the drive controllers to the point of insanity. Besid...

Rubber and foam are conductive? I never knew... I'd double-check those "facts" before repeating them. There's a reason rubber was/is used as an isolator. And unless you know what the foam is made out of, I wouldn't guess that it's conductive. As a manufacturer of synthetic goods, I know for a...

The best desk fan (non-oscillating) was the "Kool Operator Jr." I've had two of them and at low speed the are super quiet but at high speed move an incredible amount of air. They are 5-blades which move a lot more air at a given speed that the 3-blade designs of most other fans like Honeywell and Vo...

I started with an Earthwatts 430w in mine and when it took a dump, Antec replaced it with an EA500, which was louder at idle. Swapping the fan with the one from my Ninja Mini made it all better.

Re: Opinions on Antec DF-85?
Well, one thing to keep in mind is that the DF-85 is really a dressed-up Antec 1200, with a few extra baubles added to it. It's not in the class of a P-series case, but it is workable. That being said, I hope to have one soon if Antec comes through for me. If done properly it could make for an ok se...
