ok, so after some more intense digging around, i've changed the way Rivatuner's handling my card a little. while i was working on my mate's 4890, i saw that the Catalyst Control Centre would clock it down to 240MHz core speed when it was idle. i thought 'awesome!' and tried to set his rivatuner up f...

well, there are some new pics in the first post, and more in the gallery. turns out that the card doesn't use the vt1165 PWM chip that earlier cards did, so it's unlikely i'll be able to muck around with undervolting in software =( anyway, volleyball was good [second set went to 34-32 [!!], for thos...

just a quick update: my graphics card finally arrived today =) the 4890 is in, purring along quite nicely and controlled by Rivatuner. i decided that going with the Amaze version was just as cheap as getting a stocko 4890 and then an aftermarket cooler [the stock thing is noisy..] as this version ca...

no way! from my own Faculty? good work =) DTX is the spec that AMD released back in the day - makes more sense than ITX, to be honest, but it's not quite as small. the main difference for the end user is that you get 2 expansion slots and ATX size I/O area. the board i'm trying to get a hold of has ...

so, a bit of an update: there is a problem with these motherboards which apparently has been fixed in the next version [so yeah, grab the '61' version if you're looking at these] whereby they lose the PCIe slot. so, my plans of a mad little LAN box have been brought to a halt after the board i've go...

heya chaps, just waiting on a few new bits to complete my latest build, but i figured i'd post what i've got so far, considering it's all up and running. bit of background: ever since i saw a small HP case back in the day, i've been dreaming of building a machine using that size case. the style of c...

What I do get annoyed with however is people constantly recommending these mysterious got-to-have legendary 300W PSUs that must be the source of all greatness... The lowest rated brandname PSUs I can find in retail channels (in my locality) are Antec Earthwatts 380 (only when bundled with NSK case)...

Hey guys, just wanted to document a little my experiences with this motherboard - there's a great thread over on the [H] that i stumbled upon, but they won't let @gmail's register =) anyway, the main reason i wanted to post this is that the board i bought came from ebay - ie, i bought just the board...

sorry for digging up such an old thread, but just wanted to chime in, if anyone's looking for something similar in the future. one of the best ways, i reckon, to find something suitable is to check out what companies like HP and Dell are using in their SFF machines. For example, being in the same bo...

mate, i've run an Asus 8800GTX for a few years now and provided you're happy to spend a few minutes setting up Rivatuner, you're set. with temperature and downclocking profiles in place, my card's fan sits at 40% duty cycle for most of the time, only ramping up when needed [ie, temps rise above thre...

have you considered removing the floppy bay [unless of course you're intending to use it!]? that would allow you to fit 2x 120mm fans, or alternatively, mounting your HDD in that general area? obviously, that would be a custom job =] i've got a graphics card in mine, i find that it seperates the 2 c...

just wanted to chime in Jools, I've got a NeoHE and GTX in my NSK3400 [at the time, the 3480 was pointless added expense, considering i needed to replace the PSU anyway =)]. there's ages of room with the GTX [unfortunately i don't have a camera, or i'd have posted build pix already] - it mustn't be ...

at what speeds do you run your fans? if they're not flat out blasting, i sincerely doubt that they're pushing the air you say they are. also, if you are running them flat chat, why bother with a passive card? so, i'll assume that the fans aren't going full bore. next, those temps sound relatively hi...

Larfs, you're exactly right - the ratings only give you a clue as to what's going on in circuit, but even that clue is handy :) . because the caps sit [like you quite correctly point out] on the low voltage side of the fairly high efficiency supplies, they are subject to lower voltages but higher cu...

well, regardless of what volts you didn't see anywhere - volts don't kill you. have a look around the net for "how much current can kill me" or something - you will find that it is an insanely small amount!! it all depends on how you touch things, and where the current flows. as for 500µF caps, che...

well, if you don't have any heatsinks lying around, that's just too bad for you, unfortunately! like Mr jaldridge said, it's a lot of fun to work on something and see it work. also, please note i said CPU heatsinks, and not NB - even the old P1 heatsinks have a lot more surface area than NB ones, an...

Jamppa, you do realise that the easy fix for the "dual core problem" is to set the game to run on only one core, right? that's what i do...alt+tab, alt+ctrl+del, select program, right click, set affinity, deselect one core, ok, alt+tab back in. quick as! secondly, have you considered removing the fa...

sunshine, do you have a GTX? i'm sorry, but while you and i both know that the card won't need that much, that's what nVidia recommends. come to think of it, i think that's why i said for example, nVidia recommends 8800GTXs be given 28A [amps] from the 12V rails of the supply. [edit for clarity] : o...

Blake, have a look at the Tech Report's review of the GTX, 2900XT, QX6800 - they do power readings at load and idle which are helpful for working out what sort of power supply you'll need. please take a look at the system config for each power graph, because the different components in each will mea...

short answer: nothing. long answer: see above. even SLI'd 8800GTXs, quad core processors, peltiers and watercooling, numerous hard drives and a small fridge wouldn't use an true 800W PSU. [edit: to answer the question] as for swapping the psu, they adhere to a form factor, so as long as the original...
