Wii vs PS3 vs Xbox 360.. Auch!
Haven't seen this posted yet.. http://www.hardcoreware.net/image.php?src=5480&ts=1172056422 The article: http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm Amazing, almost dubious rating of the Wii! Sure its not that advanced but pulling so little juice out of the socket, probably no more than 75%...

It might be a reasonable indication that you shouldn't worry with HD temps around the 45c mark as the chances of such a drive dying compared to a cooler drive are about the same. So if it dies, it was probably not the temperature causing it. Good to read these things.. With cpu and gfx I will go unt...

Agreed.. If I may sound like "grumpy old men" (a BBC must watch!) for a moment, the level of writing has really gotten a lot worse since the Yahoo Silent PC group days. I used to think it was a consequence of broadband internet becoming more and more widely available. While this was a good developme...

Would you get a 'all in one +fax' or do faxing via software?
Hey guys, I'm too 'young' to ever have been impressed by the poor old Fax machine. A friend of mine is starting a small business and faxing is still pretty common as a business communication tool. I wonder if anyone has experience with things like www.efax.com which offer a software way for 11 euro ...

If I am correct the case is: 1) aluminium 2) has more hole area than actual 'covered' area :) That plus 5 harddisks is bound to be a problem! Do you really need 5 drives! Assuming you do.. The best option would be a case that is heavier (steel) in which you can softly suspend the drives. 5 drives wi...

Although there are differences in noise level, each DVD drive spinning at full speed will be 'way too noisy' to the average SPCR visitor. I never pay attention to which one I get as I only use it to install software or burn a cd / dvd. If there is software that needs the disc in the drive, I'll make...

The PSU doesn't lack power as your system isn't very power hungry. It might be the powersupply but it could be something else.. Perhaps you have an old (300W) psu laying around? That is still plenty of power and you can see if anything changes. The PSU is, iirc, made by Fortron. I have a similar mod...

Remco didn't listen to me when I suggested white is the only colour to paint anything in that sits outside :) ; I believe it did get too hot in summer but that was with the old 'multi fan' setup, hence the white bed sheet over the 'balcony' (wouldn't call it that!) railing. Its overall quite insane ...

Interesting.. I have not seen (m) any sata power cable that used a 3.3V wire, all just went straight from molex (5 and 12v) to a sata power connector.. And I can hotplug my sata2 drive this way, I just pulled the plug after selecting 'safely remove device' in windows.. plugging it back in powered it...

Thats an Herculian (sp) effort! The only thing missing and often talked about in the forums is that in actual applications, especially on heatsinks, the heatsink 'impendance' is important. Alledgedly fans with more blades provide more pressure making them work better. Although probably too much to a...

I don't know yet if I'm "just going to try", or spend the extra 3 euro on a dual pole thingy switch that switches 5v and 12v on/off at the same time. Then it would really be easy using this type of switch: http://www.htvision.com/product_images/601.jpg wired this way: http://img208.imageshack.us/img...

Old thread alert.. I managed to get a really cheap second HD, sata2.. But its a maxtor which, though not horrible, is not as nice as my primary Nidec Samsung 160gb.. The story of my 6800GT mod :)
Hey guys, Since I got a cheap and 'decent enough' Nvidia 6800GT I've almost gotten used to the noise it makes. However it made my DIY wooden case ( http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=27717 ) rather useless as the GFx fan was about 5x louder than the whole system before. So, this 6800 h...

I've had this fan controller for a few years now and the best bit is the temperature sensors. I always put two in the PSU, although these days you get reliable enough gpu / cpu sensors on the hardware. They're always handy though for measuring 'new bits'.. My main issue is that it can't 'bump start'...

Alright then, that shouldn't be a problem then.. The heatsink might be as, while nice and big, it hasn't got a lot of fins and the surface area is actually less than the 'bodged' AMD cooler I used on my 9700pro and its pretty hard to find 'thin fin' type bigger heatsinks. I might just get a 'big che...

3d card Ram heatsinks, really not required?
Hey guys, I recently got a nice cheap agp 6800GT. While not 'really' noisy compared to most retail cards, it IS too loud.. Now I can mount a 15x12x2,5cm heatsink from Conrad.com with a low speed 120mm nexus aiming at it. This would be one big heatsink in direct contact with the gpu core. There are o...

I would say the p180 is slightly overkill. I would consider a P150, with a DIY powersupply air intake 'tunnel' going to the front top 5.25 bay. IMO the case looks better, is smaller, and most importantly, suspends your HD properly. At first I don't even think you need to do the PSU duct, Its likely ...

Maxtor warranty woes :/
Hey all, Here's something odd. I have a dead diamondmax 10 200gb drive here, from feb. 2005. By that time most HD manufacturers switched to 3 years warranty.. Maxtor's warranty policy for DiamondMax drives is a little odd. Units sold as bare drives are covered by a three-year warranty, but those sol...

As you say, even with the fans spinning faster you had some issues with Oblivion. Your temperatures are very cool so this means that the problem isn't in the cooling but in the card just not being 100% stable / artifact free at those speeds. Its not a cooling issue! If you get a Scythe ninja heatsin...
