Using a ICH7DH and a 2,5" SATA Fujitsu disk with/without AHCI, I can use hdparm to spin down in Windows w/o problems.

Manual tweaking shouldn't be necessary. Hardtecs4u.de reports temperatures of 80-87 °C at idle and around 1000 rpm. I bet you don't want higher temperatures.

Compared to the HD 2600 the HD 2400 does not have MPEG-2 bitstream processing, frequency transform and pixel prediction or it is not activated. I'm pretty sure this is not true. I own a 120 GB Fujitsu MHV2120BH and wouldn't recommend it. It's louder than a Barracuda ATA IV and there must be more silent drives. I put it in a Scythe Silent Drive 2,5" and it's perfect now ;)

I've got one for my Gigabyte 945GM board. Dont't have the manufacturer at hand. I only use them for 1280x1024. Wikipedia says, they are interoperable.
