the biggest problem is the rear valve, perhaps if I went near horizontal, it'd stay closed with only one fan on

the flaps are extremely sensitive due to the string hinge

as for cutting a hole in your case, it's up to you! :)

yes, but one would think that cold pack gel would be different from the hot/cold pack gel, no? I dunno, my seagate 120gb ran pretty hot and it got to the point where the gel packs stayed warm, perhaps raising the drive temp more Sure, if you have a cold boot, the drives will stay cooler for a while,...

I dunno I'd stay with the cold packs :D since the hot/cold packs are designed to be either, once they get hot, they stay hot! my experience tells me that pacs specifically labelled cold did somewhat better course now I was able to snag a smart drive 2002 off someone for $30, so it's not worthwhile a...

Another radical cooling idea INPUT needed UPDATE- 1/2 DONE

4/18 UPDATE BELOW here we go again so my past adventures delt with cooling the CPU mostly here, I'm going for the whole she-bang The purpose of this is to 1 - use one fan for general computing 2 - turn on a seperate fan to divide the critical components (CPU/GPU) airflow so each recieves seperate ai...

my MB (MSI pt880 neo) does not have the ability to control fans :( Judging from your system specs (P4 Prescott & ATI 9800 Pro), I believe its cheaper and easier to just get a new motherboard that has the ability to control fan speeds using SpeedFan or some other software. Here is a list of MSI moth...

Bluefront - that's a great point, would you happen to know how the Akust thermocontrol works?

as when it turns on a fan, it merely completes the circuit? so that the fan is already at a specific voltage (a la fan controller)

that's interesting, may be perfect for what I need though, I just realized that once it turns on a fan, and it lowers the temp by say 1C and the temp goes up again, the fan turns on...etc is there any way to prevent this? EDIT instead of placing the sensor right on the GPU heatsink (VM-101), perhaps...

any cheap way to turn on a fan automatically?

So, is there any cheap way to do this with parts from say Radioshack?

perferably at a specific temp

would a cutting off a thremoresistor from a fan work?

just for one fan, it's part of a plan ;)

actually, I have tried this sort of thing only with the CPU and GPU though here for the standard ATX case and motherboard, things get real crowded fast The two major heat factors would of course be the CPU and GPU the HD can most likely be left alone practically, in order to get any meaniful amout o...

If your main concern is reliability, then you shouldn't be looking at sleeve-bearing fans. As bearings go, they are the most unreliable. For proven long-life fans, you should consider Papst or NMB-MAT. Another option is Scythe's S-FLEX series, which in my own testing was quieter than Papst and NMB-...

wow this is even crazier than my idea :D The principle is nice, but my personal opinion is that you would at least need two fans to pull it off especially if they are lowflow/low noise or at the very least have a second "emergency" fan than would activate once temps pass an unacceptable threshold co...

Unfortunately you can't suspend CD drives for some reason :) I don't think vinyl would help that much, unless it's vibration is causing the racket software based solutions might work better (nero Drive speed, though does it work with DVD?) you would need a real sound-dampening foam I've tried melami...

it helps, but may not reduce everything, you'd probably have to surround it to make it effective, depends on how hot your drive gets

actually, Ralf Hutter just sold me a 80 GB Seagate IV drive, you might want to hit him up

$45 for a drive

what kind of whine?

high frequency?

low frequency?

melamine helps with this, I booted up a Ball bearing drive yesterday and its whine was pretty bad with the case open, but once I closed the case panel and bezel, most of the higher frquency whine was gone

I still have some, I can sell you some ;)
