four 500GB 3.5''HDDs to choose from
Hi, I use a 200GB 2.5'' HDD as my system disk, but I would like to have some more space, so I'm considering another 500GB 3.5'' HDD. I have these options, but I don't know which one would be the quietest and possibly produce the least heat (I plan to enclose it in a nexus drive-a-way): 1.) maxtor/se...

hot pico psu
I just got my pico psu (the 80W wide input voltage version). I'm using it with a 19V 120W fortron brick
I wonder if it's normal that the pico psu gets so hot - I can hold my finger on it for a while only. I surely draw less than 60Watts from it.

where to buy a 1U PCI-E x16 riser card
I can't find a compatible 1U PCI-E x16 riser card. There is a Supermicro one, but they told me it's recommended for their motherboards only and then there is an ideal Hiper one that would perfectly fit in my Hiper case but their emails don't work and the shop is in Australia... Why there are virtual...

SPCR's "CPUs Ranked by Noise / Heat" guide says this about durons: AMD Duron (Spitfire core 800-950MHz) ... 33~42W. Less heat than K7 or K75 but small die area. Easy to unlock multiplier, great performance/price. 1/08/02 I had very good experience with a 950mhz duron on default speed/voltage with a...

the question is: does it perform better at the same wattage?
according to the CPU Overclock Calculator here , my current cpu outputs 26W at 2Ghz @ 1.0V. The 35W X2 would probably output 26W at 1.7Ghz @ 1.0V, but who knows if it would perform better at a lower clock speed using regular single-thread-only-one-core-is-needed applications? probably not... The oth...

Should I switch from 45W A64 to 35W A64X2?
Few weeks ago I started to build a quiet PC based on a 45W AMD A64 3800+ . I run it on ~2GHz @ 1.0V in max load. Today I spotted an equally performance-rated 35 W A64 X2 3800+ in my local shop. Should I go for it and dump the 45W A64? One thing that puzzles me is that the 35W X2 is 90nm whereas my 4...

Thanx for suggestions. My plan is to take an existing heatsink and cut it to more small pieces. All "partial" cuts are intended as they are drawn. I'll work on the 2 other projections, make dotted lines where they are not visible and fill solid parts with grey color, add dimensions. When the cutter ...

my guess
My guess would be that the more powerful psu has larger heatsinks or is otherwise more tolerant to heat, so it should need less fan RPMs to cool at the same power draw. On the other hand, it could be less power-efficient when the draw is low. I draw less than 200Watts from my seasonic s12-430 and th...

This is my first try, it's a jpeg screenshot from the dwg file (click to enlarge). White lines outline the low profile heatsink with its fins that I want to cut, red lines are the required cut. I sent it to the cnc cutting shop, but it will take a while for them to answer. http://img185.imagevenue.c...

example cad dwg files for cnc cutting
I would like to have some things cut by a cnc service i found, but naturally they need a cad dwg drawing. Does anybody have some examples - like a case or a side panel with cut marks in a .dwg file? After I draw the thing I need to cut, how do I draw the cuts? Thanx

I wanted to use the 1200rpm sflex too, but I was worried it has even higher starting voltage than the nexus. Doesn't it? nexus real silent fan in seasonic s12 430
I just replaced the clattering adda fan in my seasonic s12 430 with a nexus "real silent fan" (1000rpm max is written on the box). I expected it to not start initially because of the low psu-regulated voltage (btw less than 200W is drawn from it, so the adda never went faster than 800rpm), but it st...

AC pwm fan vs. asrock's pwm "CPU Quiet fan"
Asrock ALiveNF6G-DVI has "cpu quiet fan" settings in bios that should slow down the pwm cpu fan when the cpu is cool and speed up when it's hot. I have problems slowing down AC pwm fan (1500rpm max) even when cpu temp is 35C. The board slows it down to 1000rpm even though the fan can go as slow as ...

oh! sorry ambient was 23C of course... idle cpu @ 1000mhz / 0.8volt was 32C.
Btw I guess if I want to set the clock even lower, the FSB setting has to be used because ratios lower than 5.0x are ignored by the cpu or board.

Ambient was 32C. Yes, It could be better if the fins were vertical, but it could be even better if I cleaned it properly and put some AS5 or liq.metal pad between the hs and cpu
EDIT: sorry, ambient was 23C, not 32

passive AC64pro on A64 3800+ G1 @ 1900mhz 0.95volt = 55*C
I'm testing my new cpu and mb and just out of curiousness put an AC 64pro on it and turned off the fan. (I didn't even clean and replace the thermal interface material.) I decided to run it at 1900mhz/0.95volt max using crystalcpuid. I couldn't get it over 55C torturing it with prime95 for 1 hour. T...

It's possible that something like that can increase the effectiveness of cpu cooling but nevertheless, lapping has been reported to put down 5+ degrees with some heatsinks.
