After one week not a single result posted, too bad :( Instead of that, it's nice to read some very interesting arguments so thank you :o I suppose most people writing to this forum have either a silent fan build or a WC build, so I suppose I'm not getting much results later on either... Let's move o...

The Socratic dialog is too subtle for me. I am only sort of getting what you are saying. Would you be kind enough to explain exactly what you did and on what exact system in a single message? And what you are now doing? Some pictures would certainly be nice. Seems like you are doing something notew...

GF210, passive and cheap for your minimum requirements. I suppose it has the lowest possible power consumption with 1080p HD performance. But if you're in to 3D movies one day, go straight to GF250 or HD5000-series. There are passive options, and of cource any heatsink/fan cooling system can be repl...

Re: if truly fanless
So if the system really has no fans (except the psu), would it make sense to just take off the side panels and let as much air through as possible? I suppose you might get some more noise from the hard drives, although with some suspension you could get rid of that, for the most part. I guess with ...

Instead of rules, some of you might find some instructions useful: 1. Make sure no fans are running around your MB (passive cooled system). Don't shut off your fans unless you know what you're doing! 2. Let your computer stay on for a couple of hours (IDLE) 3. Check your room temperature and your CP...

I Underclocked my CPU to 1,2GHz (6x) - 1,8GHz (9x), and now it's undervolted to steady 0,8V. Calculated power drawn by CPU at 100% load is now 17W (original TDP is 65W). Running pretty cool (2h stress test gives only 43C to my E8400 now, main chamber is passive cooled. Ambient was 21C during the str...

Good and important questions, thank you. "Passive" stands for passive, no fans, but since almost everybody have a fan in their PSU i suppose we get some more answers by allowing that one. Personally i have a fan in the PSU, but in P182 it's in its own chamber so the fan doesn't cool the main departm...

I was a bit surprised of how much power an optical drive needs. I suppose it's the laser there which is hungry. I doubt it. Probably rather needing to move a heavy read/write head around and spin a far from perfectly balanced heavy disk. Hard drives have much lighter read/write heads that have shor...

I have no way to measure them so I googled the common rates of consumption for each part. I was a bit surprised of how much power an optical drive might need in its worst. SPCR have tested few with an average of 15,7W (full speed) but they were not too fast back then. I suppose it's the laser there ...

I have a Seasonic S12II 430W. It was very quiet already with a stock fan, now i've changed the fan to a Scythe flex after a couple of years of use and it doesn't seem to have any sound any more :) (yes, the fan is spinning). I have a low power system, so scythe's half airflow (compared to original f...

[Competition] MAX CPU performance with MIN temperature rise
Everybody who have a chance to run Zlib, CPU stress test and have access to CPU temp readings, please post here some speed results of your system. Idea of this thread is to - compare different cooling systems and CPU/MB combinations - have some discussion around subject "speed against temperature" C...

In other words... a chimney! 10 points to mr. Evil And 9 points for everybody else who helped him to get it right :) It's a 12cm wide, 1,2m long carton tube mounted right up from P182 top exhaust vent, working as a chimney (boosting natural airflow upwards). I was really surprised of how much the t...

40C is not too much and it's quite normal IDLE temperature in fanless build. Do run a load test to see if you can run your E8400 without a fan. Usually that would need some undervolting and a big heatsink to do that. A noisy HDD usually needs softer mounting, either with silicone plates or a tied mo...

I'm guessing you either have a source of cold air (airbrick/vent) right next to the intake/bottom of your case and/or a heater above the case, boosting the convective effect. even too close of the right answer :) nothing for intakes, something above, but not a heater (nothing that use energy) All i...

I must give you and others a hint at least: Air goes up without any help, what can you do (without fans) to help the passive flow upwards? Additional green mod is now also made in my passive system : E8400 normally runs with 1,1125-1,225V. With the low clock setting (1,8GHz) I was able to undervolt...

I'm using the Orochi for my Athlon x2 4400 and it's probably your best bet when it comes to full passive mode. My case has zero fans and load temps are below 50°C. Idle is barely above 30°C at normal room temperatures. Here are some benchmarks (in German, have a look at "Passivvergleich"): http:/...
