Hmm. "it is because my hard drive's temperature is not going down while SpeedFan is starting" I think that explains the problem that I was having - fan doesn't slow down on startup because the temps are rising. SpeedFan Startup with XP?
After a little head scratching, I got SpeedFan configured correctly and running smoothly on my Shuttle SN45G. Currently I'm using a Panaflo FBA08A12L as the cpu cooling fan - works great! I put the .exe file in the "startup" folder and this gets SpeedFan going and monitoring all the temps, however, ...

Hmm. Have a Cuda V 80g sata (w/seashield) in the computer that's producing this text. Subjectively, it's significantly more quiet (seek noise) than mxtr dm+9 pata drive that it replaced. If I may hop in here to show how smart I am - the stereophile article is about hum - 60hz line hum that can be generated from a variety of sources. But, this is usually obvious as it's a low frequency hum and, well, that's just what it sounds like, a hummmmmm. And, it's at 60hz, pretty low frequency...
