Re: A Windows system with idle power ~ 10 watt?

edh, HelldiverUK, others: You've got a strange definition of Idle then because it's clearly defined by the Industry as the CPU being in it's lowest power stage. What happens when the drives spin down? That's the S2 stage. S3 then powers off the monitor and drops the GPU into it's lowest power settin...

Re: Energy Efficient Business plans

First off, the board you listed isn't even a server board. In fact it's not even a workstation board. It's just an overpriced MATX that supports ECC memory as it supports a celeron. As to a dedicated video card, a bit of a red hearing there as it has IGP (Matrox G200eW). Next is your comment about R...

I've got a nice Dell 2240S that pretty low power. It's also an IPS display - max rating is 35w - that's at 100 percent back lighting. Got it after New Year from Newegg but Dell still caries them. Decent price to boot for an IPS panel Don't know about eyefinity as I run Linux and support for more the...

Re: Energy Efficient Business plans

I'll Nit Pick and kick you for some really questionable choices: 1) Drop the Low Power Intel Crap - it's over priced. You could have gone with a 1225 (no hyperthreading) and gotten the same performance with onboard graphics. 2) More RAM (2-4 times) 16-32GB would be better and where's the ECC Memory?...

Re: How toxic is thermal paste and is there a safer version?

For me, I prefer a pure silicone grease (heat sink rated) even though thermal transfer isn't as good as Artic Sliver and others and if you're underclocking/volting, it's as effective without the issues of nano particles and such being in it.

It was someone on the forums here that suggested I look at the E3 Xeon and that's what I've decided goes into my next build. I'm still debating between the 1245 v2 or the 1275 v2 - price jump is high but for the performance difference not that bad. Main reason I'm going intel instead of the AMD FM c...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

From what I've heard, SP1 for Win8 is going to restore the desktop - don't know about the start menu. Overall, having time to explore Win8, the main issue is the major changes to the UI that causes problems. For those trying to shutdown the computer, simply hit the power button (brings the menu up r...

O'kay Neil: Keep in mind that my example was for a Single 1,000,000 watts output. This is the rated output - think lightbulb at 40w (multiply that figure by how many hours of use - that's your watt hours). Standard PV Design (AFAIK) always uses the peak sun figure to calculate the watt hour output o...

I've got you all beat with an off the shelf HP system that idles at <1w Of course that's when it's in sleep mode where it goes after 20 minutes of no use If you've got Win7 then you need to set your system to sleep in as short a period as you're comfortable with. I bought one of the $40 buck upgrade offers from MS and let me tell you. If I had to do it again. I wouldn't be bothered. Win8 is a cluster puck of the worst failure I've seem from MS in a long time. It even beats WinMe and Vista combined and that's some major suckage. Another issue that comes up is...

Re: New Solar PV Array in Maynard, MA!

A Little Education on PV figures for all of you: Peak Sun = 9am to 3pm (During Winter) is used as the basis for total output of a panel. EG 200w Panel produces 1Kwh over this peak sun period. So if they're talking a 1Mwh system - that's the design rating. They'll easily hit this and may get more but...

For those who don't know how a PV array is sized, it's the Totat watts per Hour (this varies based on the panels). Re: Are there any reusable alternatives to compressed air?

Get one of those refillable spray cans (uses compressed air) as they need only s small compressor or even a bicycle tire pump (get a good foot pump). No more expensive then the canned air and certainly just as effective when using a nozzle to direct the air. Nice thing about them is you can buy mult...

What you may want are called Pico Projectors. Google for them. As they aren't very bright (low power) they wash out pretty easy but should offer what you're looking for.

Re: Crazy? or not...

I've been looking into this for a while and the one thing I've found is that isolation is pretty much the key to a quiet system. Using a standard size wood box - ensure that your mobo tray and such has as little contact with the case. This alone will drop 90 percent of the system noise. The next is ...

Re: Mini-ITX A10-5700 power numbers, Turbo Core influence

From reading the AMD specs, the APU can really put a load on things - TDP quickly goes through the roof. Your correct in your thinking that by turning off the TC, that they chip kicks into a high power state and does absolutely no stepping but and this is a big one, if you underclock/volt things in ...

Apps have nothing to do with its selection. Instead it's the 35w TDP that selected this chip as there are littlerally nothing lower rated in the 1155 socket space. According http://www.passmark.com/ this chip outperforms my current AMD x2-240 Regor by a noticible margin. Simply put, the usual trade-...

My current system is an HP Paviliion where the mobo is mounted reverse of most cases. In other words, when looking at the front of the case, it opens from the right instead of the left. The advantages offered by this is that the x16 video card slot places the HSF facing up instead of below the card,...
