Re: New 2013 build - I need advice on multiple parts.

Cases are all a matter of opinion, I find that my preference in cases tends to be very basic and somewhat easy to please. I don't like flashy things, while years ago I liked having a window, as of late, I don't want to see it. I started off liking black, now I find white to give a cleaner look (thou...

Re: Are there any reusable alternatives to compressed air?

Where I work, we have a 10gal electric air compressor, and I haven't had any problems with it. In all of my experiences, it makes no difference if the fans are stopped or if you let them spin. For fans with special bearings, this may be different, but 95% of the computers I work with are generic OEM...

Re: LianLI PC-S80 a no-go for silent&liquid Cooling?

No need for 1000W power supply. Cut that in half. 500W max, the i7 3770 isn't that power hungry, neither is anything else in that build. Sell it and buy a better one. No front fans. Rear exhaust fan is fine. Cut out the stock grill if you haven't already, use U-Channel or some sort of rubber edge co...

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already

GTX660Ti is installed and running with the Mercury Playback Engine. All is well until you open Photoshop, and see there's no OpenCL support (what a PITA). Since that's a driver issue, I'm leaving things as they are for now. Both of my monitors are DVI only, so for a while, I wont have issues with th...

I'll say that it hasn't been a walk in the park, however I've worked through my problems. Paragon Partition Manager 10.0 is incompatible. No workaround, however the shop I work at has already purchased upgraded software which does work. Paragon Hard Disk Manager is compatible with Windows 8, contain...

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already

Some updates about the build.. The perforated PCI slot covers really affected the airflow, and the top 140mm fan was creating all of my unwanted noise. I replaced the slot covers with some temporary ones to alleviate my airflow problems, which now cause the GPU airflow to rise to the rear exhaust fa...

Re: I need a build list critique

For any real DAW work, forget the Xonar, Creative and Realtek solutions and get a dedicated audio interface. In simple terms, better quality audio, better drivers, and better compatibility with major DAW software.

I'd never use any onboard audio for serious DAW work, that's inviting a problem.

For Sale Items! Motherboard & Case

Greetings all, I have two things for sale right now, both very lightly used or brand new! First up, I have a Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3 motherboard, 1155 socket that is brand new, never even opened the box. I'm asking $110 shipped to the standard 48 states. My packages get insured and you get the tracking...

Re: I need a build list critique

What DAW software are you using? I did a lot of work with Avid, so if you're going to opt for Pro Tools, then I would suggest a higher end Core i5. Unless you're going to be using a larger interface, multitrack recording, and a lot of plugins, you have no need for an i7. An i7 will be useful if you'...

Re: pico PSU 90w 19v dc in

What happens when you push the power button twice in succession? Push it once, and push it a second time quickly after. If it starts, it has something to do with the startup load not being enough to start the PSU. I have a VIA C7D embedded platform that does this with a normal 12v Pico PSU with a 10...

Re: Looking for a completely silent laptop ...

RM Clock is a great program, though difficult to get running in Win 7 due to driver signing issues. I used it to prevent throttling and speedstep, but you could use it for undervolting and underclocking just as easily. The newest ultrabooks coming out are more and more powerful with less and less he...

Re: Looking for a completely silent laptop ...

Intel based chipsets are different from what I'm referring to. I'm referring to the actual USB controller chipset, not the chipset of the motherboard as a whole. Undervolting a CPU will have a threshold, but it will also depend on the TDP to begin with, and workload. When you undervolt/underclock, i...

What specifically are you recording? Are you recording something for an Audiobook, vocals for a song, etc? It does make a difference between what's going to be best for you. My ideal ITX system is the following: 1) a. Minimal, just an SSD or an HDD, but just one internally. 2) c. Full, I need an internal optical drive, bluray read/write is best. 3) b. Moderate, enough to keep the noise to a minimum, but also provide more than adequate cooling. 4) I really am starting to...

I guess I missed a few words in there. I don't see why you'd have any issues with the risers. Whether it's a ribbon cable or 90* adapter, I've used many, and never had issues, I don't see why you would. Re: Riser card viability

As long as you're not using a Sandy Bridge or newer platform, I don't see why you would have any problems with using a PCI Audio card. Many companies are being very "hush hush" about the issues with PCI cards on the Sandy Bridge platform, but it is very visible in M-Audio interfaces, and even PreSon...

The Antec HCG series is among the few power supplies that are rated at continuous output, rather than peak. I do own a HCG-750W, and it is very quiet. My thoughts behind going for that PSU are that if I do end up upgrading to higher wattage components, the HCG-400 has a peak output of nearly 500W, w...

I'd opt for a non-K version CPU. Unless you feel like overclocking is an absolute necessity, there's no reason to get a K model CPU. My Q9400 has never skipped a beat, though now that I have to do video work alongside audio work, I'm looking at upgrade options for myself. An i5 would have enough pow...

Since you're really chasing low wattage, I have a couple questions for you! I'm wondering if there's a difference between using a half-height wifi card, or if the wattage doesn't change (potentially a size issue)? Also, I'm curious about the power settings of the monitor, rather, brightness, contras...

For something like this, I would go for the ISK-150 instead. It comes with a very good standard 150W power supply, more than you need, but it will be completely sufficient. It will also have a very quiet 80mm fan that will assist the CPU fan very well. I've put together a nice Atom powered HTPC in t...

Sounds a bit better, the GMA4000 in the 3570k will be powerful, although I'm curious as to whether you're really going to see a benefit over the GMA2500. If you have no expansion cards below the graphics card, you should be fine in that regard. As far as the physical size of the S1, it's a large cooler. You will need 154mm from the motherboard to the edge of the case for it to fit comfortably. I have two 4850's with S1's on them, and I just measured ...
