I'll have another look at Sygate, used it in the past and thought it was good. I just left Zonealarm after it started giving me grief. McAfee also started playing up with our remote desktop connections, and Norton, well it broke as well. Not had a lot of luck with firewalls recently :) I may have a ...

Yeah, I'm sure of the performance drop. I normally complete WUs once every one to two days. For some reason over the last seven days I completed only 1 !!! So I started to have a poke around to see what was going on. I could not see anything, so I thought it may have just been one dodgy unit that wa...

Agnitum Outpost Firewall warning

I have in the past used this firewall as I have liked the options it provided. Recently I reinstalled it and upgraded it to version 2.5 After doing this inside of my work units taking 1-2 days to complete, they are taking between 35-52!!!!! This is just a heads up for other people out there to check...

neither of mine vibrate much at all. I have them resting on foam so there is no vibration into the case. When held in my hand they are no better or worse than any other average drive.

I do not know what your idea of perfection is, so it is a little hard to answer.

One PSU I would have thought you should look at is the Antec Phantom. There are some reports here of it breaking, but at the end of the day Antec is known to honour its guarantee.

I was thinking along the tay's[\b] idea of allowing them to log into an internet server of their choice. How to setup a small silent Internet Cafe?

I've got a friend who is thinking about starting up a small Internet Cafe. Its an extension to his existing business, and the last thing that he wants is to have a several high performance screaming games machine next to him while he tests out this market. At the moment we are thinking about 4 games...

Death or Glory - silencing the coil whine from my Asus mobo

My machine has been emitting a reasonably loud, intermittent, high pitched whine for a few months. Its driven me to distraction to work out where it was coming from. I sounded like idle whine from HDDs, so I changed those (I wanted new ones anyway), but that did not solve it. Then it stopped every t...

I got them from whispertech.co.uk I'm still looking into the issue atm. I have a whine from my monitor, and also coil whine from the mobo. But one of the Samsungs definately has a loud high pitched whine that is very directional. If you are under the drive, then the sound is very loud indeed. The so...

Great to hear that we have got a little more mainstream recognition for the work that MikeC (and others) have put into this site. The more publicity we get, the more people will care about the noise levels their PCs put out. So many people have no idea that a PC can be quiet, they just have never ex...

Wonderful little tool Spinrite. I'm glad I've come across it, I'm sure to use it in the future. As for it solving this problem, well I don't think that it has. I used Mode 4, which writes and then reads back data from the drive. If there are any problems with this operation the drive marks the area ...

Idle whine is not effected by suspension at all I' afraid to say. The only methods for lowering idle whine is to use an enclosure. FDB's do not mean that the drive will be idle whine free. I'm struggling to recommend drives atm, as there have been a lot of new drives released, and changes to older d...

That is a point, I could use one of those tools that erases the whole HDD!! I forgot about them :) The good thing about WD, is that when you RMA you always get a different drive back. If I RMA to Samsung, and they do not find a fault, I get the original drive back, and also get charged for the fun ....

HDD analysis tool that both WRITES and reads

Hi ppl This is not an on topic question, so please accept my apologies. I have a major problem atm, in that one of my new Samsung HDDs is unable to sustain a bootable OS. No matter of imaging, re-installing etc will result in a HDD that can boot. The problem is, is that the HDD passes every test tha...

I just managed to source 2 Nidec 160Gb PATA Nidecs in the UK. One of my drives is very poor for whine. I have it inside an enclosure that rests on foam, and inside an acoustically damped case. The whine is very easy to hear 5 metres away from the machine. As it is idle whine, I very much doubt that ...

I thought that my whine was HDD related. I thought this as when I pulled the power cords out of the HDDs when they were running (don't try that at home) the whine went. I changed the HDDs and the noise is still there. I changed Gfx cards 9600 Pro > Gigabyte 6800 - again, it did not help. I also chan...

I wish a mobo manufacturer would just decide to stop selling us rubbish. I'm sure that there is not a person here that would not pay 10% for their components if only they were made properly. The time it takes to sort these problems out is easily worth spending a little more. Problem is that I do not...

My Asus mobo does this also. I have posted about this in the past and was about to attack it. I went to buy some electricians glue to pour over the offending coils. Problem was, the chap that usually advises people on what to buy was off. I'll post back after chatting to him and trying my method out.

You may have been referring to me. I had coil whine that I thought was from the graphics card as it was only present during gaming. I eventually tracked the problem to the mobo and RMA'ed it.
