Re: Nexus 140mm fan!

I'm not. Ever since Nexus switched to white/black frame design their fans "chirp" when mounted horizontally. The orange ones didn't use to have that chirp. I've been a fan of Scythe fans in the last couple of years, especially the ones with Sony bearing, but they've been incredibly tough to find lat...

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"

Nice write up JazzJackRabbit, thanks !!!! How did you mount the rad in your p280 ? Heh... that part took some time sorting out. I'm using Asus P8Z77-V LK that has the primary videocard slot in the second top most possible location. In order to have h100i waterblock reach the GPU I had to mount fans...

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"

Well, I finally took the plunge and did the mod on my 7970. I used h100i and Dwood's bracket. So here's a small report in 5 parts. Part 1: A tale of three CLCs I ordered and received the Dwood bracket late last year, and it took me this long before I finally had the opportunity to build a new rig ba...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD07 & GD08 Media Center Cases

You can put P182 on its side. Sure, it will take more space than GD07, but it will work, and it will be quieter, and easier to work in. I'm speaking from experience, GD07, and probably most HTPC cases are difficult to set up. I probably spent 4 hours moving my setup into GD07 case, and as it turns o...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD07 & GD08 Media Center Cases

I don't know. The only way to waterproof a case in the basement is to put it somewhere high, and it's no harder to put P182 high than it is GD07. GD07 is a fine HTPC case, I don't know any case that's better, but it is still HTPC case. It is very crammed inside, it has limits on the CPU coolers, etc...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD07 & GD08 Media Center Cases

One thing I forgot to mention though, in my case the power button "binds" or "snags" on something if I press it too deeply. Probably catches either on the aluminum door or something else. Not deadly, but definitely annoying in an otherwise good case.

Re: Passive & silent AMD Radeon 7950 x2 multi-GPU video card

You've already outlined all the reasons why it's not suitable to be used in a passive application. The fins in that heatsink are too tightly packed, and it's designed to be cooled by the airflow from the server case fans which are LOUD. This card, even if it was released to the consumer will fry in ...

Re: SilverStone Grandia GD07 & GD08 Media Center Cases

I got GD07 last year for my HTPC after doing a lot of research. That was pretty much the only case that allowed full ATX motherboard, had room for full size 5.25 optical drive, good ventilation, front door to help with the OD noise and hide the annoying LED, and looked good. And all things consideri...

I bought one (along with a few others) because I want to watercool my videocard. Long story short I returned it because the pump made loud clicking/rattling noise. You can read over here:

Re: GE's dual piezoelectric cooling jets

GE claims similar performance to fans with half the power, only 4mm thick, and very quiet. I know they supposedly did a demo on a laptop, but I'll believe it works when I see it with my own eyes. This new technology is just a new fancy way to move air through the heatsink. You still need heat excha...

Looks like 520 buzz/coil whine is by design. There is a poster in the power supply forum with the same issue.

So looks like 400/460 are a better choice if you're truly noise conscious.

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"

When I downvolted all 3 pumps, all three got louder when I dropped them below 7-9 volts, even the Corsair H100i. The Asetek units got significant uneven sounding rattle, at 7 volts they sounded the same as if I turned the pump upside down, and H100i got some sort of quiet-ish chirping/bubble noises ...

Re: Antec P183v3 front fans

I don't think there is much purpose other than convenience. In order to attach fan directly to the case you'd have to take the front panel off. If you attack fan to a black plastic plate as you call it, you won't have to take the front panel off. Personally I wouldn't put any fans over there, as lon...

I'm going to be building my new rig in P280. I have to get new front panel from Antec because it's been damaged in shipping and I only found out now. However, I poked around otherwise, and the top panel of P280 rattles if you flick it with you finger. That can't be good, so I want to take pre-emptiv...

I've googled/researched the hell out of these pumps and I have read reports about H80/H100 that said H80/H100 pumps were sensitive to even the slightest overvoltage on the 12V line. So as part of my testing I have hooked up all three pumps to a fan controller and tried downvolting them. And yes, it ...

Re: Antec P280 clicking noise

Didn't try stock P280 fans so do not know if it's normal or not. Generally speaking every fan is going to make some kind of noise, some because of the way the bearing is designed, some because of manufacturing defects, for example the fan in my Corsair PSU chirps, annoying as hell and I can't replac...

I'm more interested in how I can remotely turn on my HTPC though. I'm tired of walking over and having to press physical button.

I would describe them as semi-quietish at idle. Basically quiet enough to get you through the webbrowsing and whatnot, but they get louder if you actually use your CPU.

This is direct result of hard drive manufacturer consolidation. The high prices and reduction of warranties across the b...

FYI GeForce 630 is significantly slower than 560 despite being "next gen". If you want maximum gaming performance out of all three 560 is the way to go. Although to be honest, I'd look into AMD videocards, generally they provide better bang for the buck.
