Reminds me of that Monty Python sketch...maybe we should make a Club For Putting Everything On Top Of Foam.

'On my way here, I saw no less than ten things that were not on top of foam'.

I just put my hds on foam and put a 5V fan over it. I also suspend my fans on foam, lol, on top of the hd. :)

IMO a decent heatsink, provided you put a L1A or similar fan on it. I use a Nexus 80mm with good results. You may as well throw out the original fan.

When I was very very little we had a Lambda 3000. My elder brother could program the Lambda to make random characters fall down from above on the screen.

I think that was all we could do with it.

Then we got a Vic 20, because the Lambda sucked.

true, my router makes a very high-pitched sine tone too. I could easily imagine some people are simply unable to hear such high frequencies. My ears are perfect, though. :S

I can recommend the Global Win CBKII-58, a 60x60 mm HS+fan combo. When undervolted it makes very little sound, and what there is is smooth like an android's bottom. At 8 volts or thereabouts it was adequate for my 1700+ Palomino.

Avoid Papst like the plague, get the Nexus. I have a pc with only two '12 db' Papst, and they annoy me so much I am reluctant to turn on the machine. The Nexus is wonderful, even at 12 volt, but are harder to get hold of.

I just got three Nexus fans, and I am very impressed. They DO beat the L1A Panaflo. I'm running the Nexus fans at 12 v now, the quality is that good, so I'm not worried about start-up voltage.

however, I only have China-produced Panaflos to compare with. Still, thumbs up.

I replaced the original fan with a L1A Panaflo on mine, it's really a superior fan. I have better cooling now, since I can turn it up some more and still keep lower noise, running at 7-8 volts dropped my load temps 4 degrees C, compared with the bundled M1A at 5 volts. And at this level the noise is...

There's another twist to this, sometimes excessive INtolerance to noise can provoke tinnitus. Tinnitus usually comes along with hypersensitivity to sound, or what doctors call 'monophobia'. If your CRT bothers you, a subway train braking will make your ears hurt. It's rather psychological. Anyways, ...

Allow me to resurrect this stillborn thread with my new vga card, the Tyan Tachyon 9600 pro. It has a software adjustable fan that goes from 7000 rpm to 3100 rpm. At 3100 rpm it's really very quiet compared with other vga cards I have heard.

Hereby recommended. :)

Tolerable fanned vga cards? post your experiences

I was thinking, maybe some of you had experienced a vga card with a factory installed fan that was at tolerable noise levels. It's hard to tell from other sites what cards are quiet, since noise tolerance is a notch higher elsewhere. And I'm not thinking silent, but simply tolerable. That's subjecti...
