Re: P3 ERA Celeron General Advice Needed

Washu: Thanks for the comments about the possible issue with the Pico PSU in regards to the 5/3.3 volt lines. If needed, I can salvage parts from a dead AT PSU to get the needed connectors and simply build my own version of a Pico. The main reason I thought of the Pico is that the OEM PSU is pushing...

P3 ERA Celeron General Advice Needed

I've got an old 700Mhz Celeron (P3 ERA) MATX system I'm looking at repurposing as the home router. The CPU fan is fairly quiet but I'm looking at going completely passive so any suggestions on that are welcome. On the power front, the PSU only outputs a max of 100w, so a 120w Pico should be plenty a...

Re: AMD A8-3850 Quad Core Desktop APU (updated July 10)

Lawrence: One thing I found interesting was the GPU performance graphics. Comparing the integrated Intel HD against the APU showed almost identical numbers. Pretty impressive that AMD was able to match Intel's performance. One thing I get a real kick out of is that most people don't understand what ...

Re: Help with WD Caviar Green problems ...

The reason the misalignment caused problems is that the drive used the new 4K boundary instead of the 512b system that XP understands. Thus an Alignment issue such as this can and does cause major performance issues. I suspect what happened was that the Repartitioning defaulted to the new 4k cluster...

Re: Amd 5670 or 5770

Well I run a Saphire 5670-VGA model (has a vga connection) with 512 and it's fanless. Main advantage of the 5670 is the lack of need for a video card power connector (slot powered only) which means it's max draw is 75watts (PCIe spec limit). The only reason to go with the 5770 is Gaming and that's i...

Seems like someone else has fallen into the fallacy of thinking an Atom is better. Sorry but from a cost/performance issue, the only way an Atom makes any sense is for a Laptop where price is not an object. Personally, you would be able to get as good if not better energy savings using a budget Cele...

I'm using the Saphire 5670 with VGA output and the default fan speed of 30 percent is good enough to handle Supreme Commander with everything at High. I can even run the Heavan Benchmark with everything at Max settings and not hear the fan speed up at all (full screem mode) so I'd say off hand the c...

The one place that'll kill you is the Video Card. For the performance level's you're talking, you wont get below 30-50 watts Idle on the card alone. That means you need a Mobo with CPU/Chipset and all other internals that uses less then 5 Watts - the only thing I can suggest is an Arm based setup bu...

The best way to cut power demand in Vista/Win7 for AeroGlass is to use a custom setting. For example, I've got a basic 7300GT card and to keep things usable while still running aero I had to change a few things. The settings that provide 90 percent of Aero's benefits are these 2 Desktop Composition ...

Mplayer does offer the ability to read a streaming output (TV Card) and once configured can record that input using memcoder for the output, which is what it sounds like you want.
