Exhausting the heat externally IS important because half of the PC's power usage (and therefore heat generation) is in the video card, so if venting internally you will have to double the airflow through the case to get the same cooling effect as was previous. I would still say one big fan is bette...

Its not so bad. CPU coolers do not exaust the heat either. I think the best way of doing it is with a HR-03 mounted on the reverse side of the card and just have a single 120mm fan to take all the heat out. 8800 is already quite quiet, you might as well go for passive cooling if its too loud for you.

HR-03 and northbridge heatsink - how much clearance?
Hi, I plan to buy a HR-03 rev A for my 8600GT. Does anyone know how tall the northbridge heatsink can be before it makes contact with the HR-03? I tried asking Thermalright but got a slightly cryptic answer. My motherboard is asus AM2-VM. It has the northbridge right up close to the graphics slot so...

I would wait a while for SSD to come down in price. A year from now they will be much cheaper. 1.8" SSD are not easy to got hold of at the moment. SSD still too much of a niche thing. Unless you are trying to sleep in the same room as the laptop, i dont think the HDD is too anyoying. It wouldnt put ...

Samsung Q40 fanless laptop is pretty good.
Just got a new samsung Q40 fanless laptop. As you can imagine it is very quiet it has a 1.8" 4200rpm HDD as the only thing that makes noise (so I guess it makes as much noise as a video ipod). The noise the HDD makes is high pitched whine. With the seeks being very quiet and not that noticeable. Bat...

Yes I was planning on HR-01, it should work well in my system. With all those heatpipes I'm sure it will provide decent cooling. Graphics card passive coolers use fewer heatpipes and are smaller but they can cope with >100W of heat. Yeah northbridge feels really hot, but it may not be as hot as you ...

BIOS update is done and surprise surprise the CPU fan is running at 1300 RPM now  Bugger, I wish they let you define the limits of the fan speed. I thought it was too good to be true! I needed the update to fix resume from S3 problem. Fan doesn't even need to come on at all untill CPU is at 40*...

yes i'm sure about the fan speeds. I used latest (beta) version of speedfan to find out the numbers. But when I just go over to the fan and look at it and it is hardly moving at all and I am straining to hear any noise from it. I am just trying to update BIOS. See if that makes any difference. I am ...

Just run test again with 20 mins CPU burn in and with case on, this time tho it has a discrete graphics card a 8600 GT putting heat into the case so it is even harder test. I wouldn't call 65w TDP low power, it is pretty standard. 45W TDP is the low power version. Just the old 90nm X2 power consumpt...

thats some mega bucks you've got to spend there. I have tryed the full blown water cooling rig. I would say it is not good enough for quiet cooling (I did not take into account the noise the pump makes - low frequency humming like a fridge, very annoying). If it were me I would go with Athlon X2 wit...

Athlon X2 and ASUS - quiet out of the box!
I just had to make a new thread for this. I am extremely impressed (I am very fussy, not easy to impress!) with how well asus Q fan works with a standard "free" AMD box cooler (standard aluminium, no heat pipes etc). I can't believe how easy it was to get it working so well. The Q fan has only optio...

That VX450W is available at my local computer store, cheaper than the seasonic too, excelent! HR-03 looks great I didn't know it could be mounted the other way round. That would be perfect, it would leave all expansion slots clear and alow heat to be taken out by the case fan. This is my motherboard...
