Quiet and cheap power supply for my roommate?
Update:
After playing World Or Warcraft beta, my roommate has decided that an upgrade is in order, meaning, time to pick out some quiet parts for him . What's a power supply with perhaps more headroom than the one you recommended but still quiet at stock? ie, 400 watts

I tend to use the first 3. I use the fan control to lower the fan's speeds to well, the minimum, except for the CPU Panaflo, which I can't hear through the case and through my desk, so it's at 12V. After the fan's speeds are at minimums, I just forget about them, never adjusting them after that. My ...

Here's a reply that's not borderline flaming (just a small update on my Dvorak experience)... After a little bit of getting used to... I consider myself fairly proficient at both Dvorak and Qwerty. It took awhile to get used to Qwerty again but I think I got it. Switching between the 2 isn't too bad...

I don't know if they're loud enough or if their volume is the same when they're close to empty (or constant while you spray), but how about one of the compressed air dust blower cans? Anybody that deals with computers has one (or in my case, needs another). You can recommend a specific brand from so...

Bad luck putting 3rd party heatsink last time. Try it again?
I put an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer 9600XT and it didn't work afterwards. I've seen a couple posts about other people having similar problems (but having success by putting the stock heatsink back on). Most of the time the diagnosis I read (in my case as well) was a short circuit due to the heatsin...

vid card may be dead. AGP 8x vid card on 4x mobo?
I remember a year or so ago the difference wasn't a big deal, but is that still the case now? I have a 4x motherboard and I was running a 9600XT with an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev 3... but I encountered a problem other people had, involving what may be a short circuit or lack of contact or some...

What's the shim? I'm having a similar problem (again). I had it over summer but I managed to fix it. I figured the Arctic Silver 3 caused a short circuit, so I covered the area surrounding the center (where the heatsink makes contact) with electrical tape. It fixed it for a time. But after I OCed th...

What's the difference between these Seasonics?
I'm looking at http://www.svc.com/seasonic.html , and I'm thinking of getting either the Super Silencer 400 or 460 Watt. From browsing the forums, it seems like the 400 Watt gets more recommendations, but the 460 Watt is only $5 more. Is it any louder? Any less efficient? Also, what's the difference...

Bluefront, Were you pleased with the Fun Town Foam's ability to dampen? Can you give any examples of its effectiveness? How did you attach it to the case? I'm just asking for more general details if you don't mind. I'm looking for a cheap alternative to Acoustipak. I don't need any drastic reduction...

Is there anybody that knows of a quiet mini-keyboard? That is, a keyboard without a numpad and with a length of about 30cm/12" or 35cm/14". Right now I'm using a Viewsonic KU-201. It has a numpad but it has the arrow keys integrated into the side like laptop keyboards. It's also just as silent. How...

From what I hear, active noise cancelling headphones don't work at all frequencies (and most don't sound good). I think your best bet is the earplug type canal phones (Ety's, Shures) or a closed larger headphone (The Sennheiser HD-280s would be good). For more info, check out http://www.head-fi.org ...

ascii I meant that the navy test was the only one that was cited heavily by both sides (though I suppose the Strong one got a lot of attention as well). But hardly any other tests were mentioned, and those that were were mentioned only briefly. I was hoping you could link more tests. When I did rese...

I don't understand how comfort and speed can't be related. It seems like minimal finger movement and switching between hands are the keys to fast typing, and are the keys to comfortable typing as well. But I have no real hard evidence. Edit: Actually, I might be wrong here after reading more. I supp...

UPDATE
It's been over 2 months... and another update (for no reason at all) I did 93 WPM in a 1 minute burst and 79 in 3 minutes. At typingtest.com again. BTW... the first couple weeks were the hardest. I was practicing only a couple hours a day. But I was practicing drills (linked in this thread). The wor...

I'm using a viewsonic ku-201 from newegg for about $30. It has laptop style keys. I like it. It's also sort of "mini". It has a numpad but the arrows are scrunched like ther are on a laptop. I like this because I want the mouse to be closer to the home rows than on the standard keyboard (people I've...

*just to bump* I decided that I didn't have much to do and a duct wouldn't increase noise levels too much. Temps are down to "no side panel" levels. I may have exagerrated the low temps from before because the weather had been somewhat cool back then. It's getting hotter now. Noise levels are still ...

Coloring a case
I've had this old generic beige thing for forever and a half. I decided to stick with it and just mod it rather than get a better case because it seemed fun and I needed the experience and had the time. The goal was get better airflow and temps while minimizing noise. I made a PSU duct, a CPU duct, ...

http://www.svc.com/pan80.html has them for $7. I got mine from there and they are in fact the L1As. The site is reliable (I haven't had a problem ordering from there numerous times) It's not just shape of fin that matters. It's construction ("fluid dynamic bearing") that makes it quieter, minimizin...

To duct or not to duct? (Advice please) *EDIT* I ducted
I've finished modding the comp. It is very very quiet. Almost silent, and probably just about there if I put it completely under my desk. (I reduced all fan vibration, reduced HD vibration, built a PSU duct, undervolted CPU, undervolted all fans except the CPU fan). It's very hard to tell the differ...
