I run Sophos AV on my XP box and it has never caused any problems. It folds 24/7 with the CLI client now, but I have used the GUI client without problem in the past too.

My worry is that I could break my whole farm. That would be "a bad thing". So I probably won't upgrade, unless I find some compelling need to do so. LTSP-4.0 does look really cool though. Ahhh. The voice of reason that I really should listen to. After a week of cursing, compiling, breaking things, ...

I don't suppose a huge number of google users hack the registry to fold for their own team, even though the toolbar is a simple way of borging m...

I'd go with the cheapest pc you can get your hands on - you can sometimes pick up old Pentium 133's or the like for free.

Add a load of disks.

Run linux with samba.

No. The SX2 and SX2 pro are very different. If you can't get the SX2 pro then the SX1 is the next best 120mm NB fan. The standard SX2 is loud

I've only tried the Nexus, but I'm more than pleased with it.

Cheapest UK retailer was Novatech last time I looked. They also do a decent price on the Zalman.

If you're going with Noiseblocker fans I would get the 120mm SX2 Pro Blacksilence. It is as good as inaudible at 5v, much better than the SX1. The 80mm S3 isn't all that quiet. I have a few S2's which are pretty good at 5v. For the intake on a sonata (or should I say to cool the hdd) and S1 would pr...

I'm pretty sure now that the problem is these new distributions. Mandrake 10 and Fedora 2 beta 2 both have kernel 2.6 and everything else is still on 2.4. So the solution would appear to be getting something older like Mandrake 9.2 or Fedora 1 etc.

Thanks guys. Seems like the newest releases are best left to those who can sort out the odd problems. I'll have to have patience and try Gentoo again. I think it was acpi I added to the kernel last time that killed it. Just go for the minimum this time and get it working. And I've always got Mandrak...

Linux help needed !!

I decided to post here since my linux box will be folding 24/7 once it's up and running :) Over the last few weeks I have downloaded and tried 3 different distros - gentoo, mandrake 10 and fedora 2 beta 2 (1.91). Given that you can buy passive 9600 pros then I'd say it's fairly safe just to unplug the fan. You say you have decent case airflow anyway which should do the job.

Well the wu finished normally so I guess the answer is not to worry about it.

I did have one thought that it may be caused by user switching in WinXP.
Don't see why since I have it running as a service though (with -service on the command line too)

Has anyone tried the AOpen MK79G-N?

If I can't guarantee getting any more v1.0 (or the new 7.2) Biostar M7NCG-400's then this was my next best thought for a mATX nForce2 board. Would be nice to have confirmation that it can under/overvolt before buying though.

I just swapped the 380S out of my Sonata for a Fortron FSP350-60PN(PF).

If your computers are getting louder after a few years, my first guess would be the amount of dust accumulated inside them is now causing the fans problems. Have you given them a spring clean?

Use close for the disconnect line instead of quit.
This closes the connection but doesn't exit ftp.
