After some time looking at foam on the web, I'm coming to the conclusion that, in general, the foams McMaster sells are too thick (typcially 1") for most PC applications. Melamine is the exception here since it is plenty thin enough. I'm not sure the AcoustiPack is really all that much more advanced...

Ooh... the answer is obvious: Save the $ and put it towards broadband at home! In Vancouver, the phone company is offering $25/mo for a year of DSL for new users -- with 1st month free. That's Cdn $, BTW. Probably under ~US$200/year. There must be similar offerings where you are? No can do broadban...

Re: Why don't we see more bottom vents?
Hmmmm. Thought I replied to this last night??? This is a great question and certainly worthy of discussion. * Should be (not sure) better for noise since the bottom of the case is further from you ear and it's not pointing towards you like the front bezel typically is. I think that depends on the su...

Why not try some judicious OC'ing first & see how far you can go? If you can hit 2.4G (not inconceivable with higher Vcore) then you'll get a good idea of the performance gain. Also, are P4-2.4C even available anymore? I know Intel stopped shipping all P4s slower than 2.8G about a month ago. Hmmm. ...

P4 2.4C vs. 2.8C cooling & power advantages??
I ended up with a ASUS P4P800 Dx mobo a Zalman 7000A, and some DDR3200 RAM (don't ask, it's a long story) and I am trying to decide between: (A) Keeping my P4 1.8A 400MHz FSB - ~50W max and the accompanying 2100 RAM and not fully utilizing the speed available on this mobo in the name of quiet coolin...

Nice setup tuna. If you are open to tweaking suggestions here are a few ideas that you could toy with. Remove the orange rope altogether. Turn your cable ties either 90° or 180°. Run your bungee cord through the cable ties and under the drives. Tie a knot in the bungee cord between the HDD and the c...

Re: 350 or 400W PSU for Athlon XP3200 based PC?
Currently got a cheap 430W PSU powering my PC which is really noisy, so looking for a new quiet PSU. PC is made up of: Athlon XP3200 (not overclocked) Gigabyte GA7N400 Pro2 motherboard Asus 128MB Radeon 9600XT 1 GB PC3200 DDR 1 SATA 7200rpm disk 1 IDE 7200 rpm hard disk 2 IDE CD drives Tempted to g...

Aphonos – don’t think I didn’t try quiet components, but wherever you have mechanical particles, rotation etc. there IS some noise. But they might be quiet, but they are certainly silent. I’ve removed all movable components in my old computer but I could still hear humming of the electricity in my ...

bomba and Ralf raise good points. bomba, though I appreciate your caution, I'm starting to wonder if you had a childhood accident with a flaming power supply that has scarred you for life. I second Ralf's comment on flammability. Interesting with the above product that the flame rating does no...

what do you think of the 3 ply aluminum I linked to above? it's pretty thin, maybe a little too thin... Hmm, wish I had noticed it earlier. More than twice the DLF of polymeric mastic, not much more expensive, lighter. Just have to watch out for shorts, but since there's likely to be a layer of foa...

Let me start by saying lots of other materials could be used and lots of other high-end/high-cost materials could be used. My purpose was to try to duplicate (or at least approximate) the AcoustiPack Deluxe--that is becoming a rather popular choice after Ralf's review--but at a lower price point. Yo...

Hi, Aphonos. It's really nice to have everything (with links, no less) in one page. One thing you might want to watch out for - the polymeric mastic comes in a big sheet, so shipping is going to be expensive (for bulk as well as for weight). Weight more than bulk IMO, since the mastic comes in a ro...

McMaster DIY AcoustiPack idea
Would the following three products from McMaster.com produce something of a DIY AcoustiPack Deluxe kit (for less money)? ( SPCR AcoustiPack review , SPCR Pre-cut kit review ) Granted, you'd have to do the trimming and fitting yourself, but unless you get a pre-cut kit, you have to do that anyway. Ad...

The temperature was around freezing, and the foam pillow turned rock hard. Yup, like I said, heat reactive/sensitive. Hmmmm. Let us know if you get anywhere with a use for this. I have one of these pillows and my first thought is that since this foam is heat-reactive (it softens based on body heat) that if if were used to support a HDD that it might just swallow the drive as the temps went up. Though being so soft,...

I would suggest cutting a hole in the top rather than in the bottom. In this case there's no need for an exaust fan - hot air will exit by itself. A top blow-hole provides a nearly-direct path for sound to leave the case and enter the user's listening environment and, as such, is not a recommended ...
