Re: Monitor Suggestion

I cannot find the option in the menu for "factory Settings", where the "OD" (overdrive) setting is to be found, it should be on by default, but the specs might have changed since this model was released, and the "factory settings" menu might have been removed altogether. The only thing that might be...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

The monitor looks fantastic, thanks for the recomendations. The colours: The colours are simply better in every way... richer, more vibrant and are obviously a closer match on screen to what they are in real life (photos a prime example), photo's are especially good to look at, and everything looks ...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

That Benq does look good, but its an expensive screen @ £260, sure you get some good benefits, but sadly the monitor doesn't seem to have any professional reviews so its difficult to identify just how good it is in reality vs manufacturer specs, and a big question remains over the "automatic brightn...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

Thanks for the suggestions. That Dell monitor retails for £199 and looks pretty good, my only concern is with the LED Backlight flicker. I have experienced this with just a few minutes of use with a couple of 19"-22" LED screens a couple of years ago. This was not included in the testing of this mon...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

-RANT- Having not shopped around for a new monitor for a while, I have discovered the same problem as previously. Is the damned screen glossy or not, if I cant find out I wont buy it, no matter how good it claims to be. I will not have a glossy screen, they drive me nuts. The seem to be a number of ...

Monitor Suggestion

My monitor seems to have given up, its had a good innings and was an excellent purchase. I will double check in the morning that its not some weird intermittent fault, but its sure looks dead. It is a Samsung SyncMaster 245B 24" 1920x1200 monitor. 19x12 monitors these days cost a fortune, so i would...

Re: Nexus/Akust Dual HD vibration reducers

I have used the DoubleTwin model and it's very good as far as these things go since they are fairly soft.
That's good to know, thanks for the input.

A quick couple of questions, what size gaps are there between the drives.? and what size gaps between the 5.25" drives above and below.?

Re: Nexus/Akust Dual HD vibration reducers

That (basic) design has been tested before by SPCR, the conclusion was that the rubber was too hard to be of any significant value - it helped, but not a great deal, and it of course does nothing to help the airborne drive noise. Saying that, this is a different design, it has the ability to mount 2...

I am glad its not just me that thinks that this review was lame. My point were the arbitrary selection of a cooler "failing" when the CPU temp gets to 100 degrees.... WTF. along those same lines they kept on complaining that they had problems keeping the test environment at a steady temperature, mor...

Is it just me or is this review lame

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-heat-sink-haswell,review-32733-22.html A little over a decade ago "Tom's Hardware" was the best alongside "AnandTech". Tom's went lame many years ago, but has since regained my appreciation. Please tell me if you think that I am being a little harsh on them. I spec...

Re: My Political Compass

I thought that I would start the test again to identify some shifty questions that force an answer that is wrong regardless of the answer you give (i.e. there is no correct answer because the answers are far to complex to be agree/disagree). Here are some questions from the test alongside the answer...

That is the essence of being humanitarian. If I were disabled -- and that can happen any time through accidents or disease -- I would want to be looked after. That is what the system is there for, and almost no-one wants to see that change. By the way, the proportion of abusers of the social system...

Re: Open-borders immigration - Discuss

Yes of course. Letting the handicapped starve to death is not an option. But it's not taking exactly, since we in a democratic society agree to use public funds for this. A great many handicapped people are simply not able to work (or there are not provisions in business to allow them to), and thos...

I was thinking (5) gift economy, from the bottom up. :) Sadly that will only exist in small pockets or communities, and of course between friends and relatives as it has always done and will not (in our lifetimes) get anywhere near "money" as a way of paying for things, not least because government...

How accurate this is can only be judged (like an true scientific research) on a large group of people who are only completing the test once and are not cheating or lying in any way. Then and only then will we know how accurate this test is when we ask people at the end of the test where they expecte...

I don't think a balance between authoritarian right and authoritarian left is the answer. I like libertarian left myself, surprise-surprise. Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

I didn't see anyone else mention this, but you suggested the idea in your first post that you might want to do some kind of mirroring - DONT. Mirroring is only of any real use for mission critical servers, what you want is either an image of your boot drive and a reliable bit of backup software, or ...

But that is not to say we should not work towards a less unequal society, right? A balance has to be found between a "winner takes all" scenario (USA being the nearest example I can name) and Communism which we all now know does not work in reality as it would ideally, and the UK is in about the ri...

I see it primarily as a problem of inequality rather than an immigration policy problem. Many of the problems you describe could be solved, were just the distribution of wealth a little less unequal. Education battles overpopulation for example, but does it pay for the guys at the top to educate th...

I still don't see any evidence that free movement of people is a terrible thing. Free movement of people is neither a good or a bad thing, it is both good and bad. The bad things however IMO outweigh the good things by a very large margin, simply because the country that people are moving to has li...

The UK is not a country with "open" borders, but has agreed to free movement of goods and persons as the most fundamental EU treaty. Open-borders immigration - Discuss

This started off in a different post (which I don't want to hijack). I would like to open this topic to everyone whose countries have a mass-migration (of un-skilled labour) problem. There may be benefits, both short and long term in some instances, and it would be wise to discuss the positives and ...

Re: Atheism and yoga

My example of a rapidly changing country due to an open-borders governmental policy for the last 20-years was an example of something that people should be concerned about.... unlike kids being taught Hatha Yoga at school. One is there to teach kids to relax, stretch etc. The other is to bring so ma...

I think that will be easy to answer 12-months from now, until then find someone with a crystal ball. All I can say is a very abbreviated version of what I have read. As one of the "outspoken Atheists" on this forum, I personally have no problem with "Yoga" as an instrument of relaxation, stretching and fitness, however preaching, chanting and "spiritualism" are totally different matters, thankfully there is a defining line between "Yoga" as most people in the Ju...
