Why am I getting Tinker cores? Unfair :)

One of my machines is getting Tinker cores which are slow a$$es. Two others are getting exclusively Gromacs cores and as result my p3 1 GHz beats my Celeron 2.4 GHz :( Any idea about what heuristics they use to distribute the load and types of cores? Or I just have to wait and eventually I will get ...

I don't know about WD 800B but the special edition drives, 800JB make awful lot of noise at idle. 7200.7 is WAY quieter at idle (but seeks are louder).

Is "system" temperature measured off the NB? Why are you saying that your "system" temp went up after you changed the NB HS? I'm just curious because I don't know where the thermal sensor for "system" temp really is.

THanks!

As a true hardware junkie I have a Celeron 450 MHz sitting in my closet together with a working motherboard. I'm sure I have some sticks of RAM sitting around, a spare SPU and a video card. Yea, and a hard drive, of course. Now, I don't have a case and those somponents aren't silent, so... We'll see...

If you are sure that the culprit is that the service controller does not like UNC paths then you have 2 options: 1) you can use NET USE command to mount a network path as a disk 2) you can create a RAM drive, copy the executable there and start it as a service from there I'm not sure whether option ...

RESOLVED: Stats not updating

How long does it take for stats to update once the completed unit has been submitted back to the server? This was going to be my 2nd WU :( I've completed the WU but stats aren't updating. I've also encountered some error when obtaining next WU: [03:11:56] - Couldn't get size info for dyn file: work/...

Allright!!! I've got my first WU done and I'm at spot #203 with whooping 32 points. I've got 3 machines doing the calculations right now, 1) AMD Athlon 2000+ XP with 512 MB DDR 2700 - running at 95% utilization while I'm not playing games (usually during the night) 2) Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz with 512 ...

1. I have 2 different flavors of WD SE (8 MB cache) drives and they are incredibly noisy. Noisier than any other drive I've tried, IBM, Maxtor, 7200.7, etc. The worst part is that they are noisy at idle, not at seek. 2. Crash of a hard drive is something that happens from time to time and everyone s...

Need starter/newbie guide

Hello all, I just joined the program by installing Folding on my 2 machines (AMD 2000+ XP and Celeron 2.4). I'm working on my first WU and I hope everything will work fine. So far I have a bunch of questions and I think it would be worthwhile to have a guide for those starting out like me. Does a su...

Is 350w Fortron the best "value" PSU?

Hello all, I've got 300w Fortron PSU in my server right now and this thing is almost completely silent. I want to get 350w for my workstation that has more stuff in it (high end ATi video card, etc.) and I'd like to know if: 1) 350w is substantially more noisy than 300w 2) Should I go for Aurora ser...

I'm not sure but I think that most CD/DVD drives can't run in high ATA modes so when you plug it with the HDD together on the same channel it slows the channel to ATA33 speeds. In general it is a bad idea to run a HDD and a CD/DVD drive on the same channel. Move the CD/DVD drive to another channel a...

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the exact heatsink you want to get but I was under the impression that you can mount most heatsinks either with 4 holes or with the clip because (I think) AMD does not require 4 holes unlike Intel anymore. My Zalman heatsink was "flower" type and it could be mounted b...

I don't know if this is too late but here is what I've done to my machine and it became substantially quieter. Not silent but very quiet. I put SLK-800 on it with Panaflo L1A at 12v. I can't hear it. If you can then get bigger heatsink, like SLK-900 and 92mm fan at 7v. Zalman heatsinks are also good...

Antec 660 modding

Well I'm not sure how important this is to all of you since this isn't one of the highly praised cases but since I have it and I made some attempts to make it quieter I'll share the information. The case is Antec 660B, Performance case from Antec. I got it a year ago. It has TruePower 330w that came...

I've had my MSI KT4 Ultra for more than a year with Zalman heatsink (flower type, copper, heavy, about 450-500g) with no mounting holes and nothing happened. I was careful when moving the case though. I've just changed it to SLK-800 because I think SLK is superior to Zalman. I will post the results,...

3700AMB success

Well, I've finished the 1st stage in quietizing 3700AMB that arrived in the mail a few days ago. What I've done was essentially a list of Ralf's mods (see his thread in Gallery forum). Here is what I've done: 1. Cut the rear grill with Dremel. Not easy. I mean, cutting was easy but making the hole r...

You might consider 3700AMB. Ralf Hutter built an awesome system with this case that runs cool and quiet. You'd need to modify 3700AMB though, so if you want something out of the box then it is not for you. I ordered 3700AMB myself with new PSU (Fortron 300w) and grommets and fan holders from McMaste...

Okay, I read the posts about the 3700AMB and came to the following conclusions: 1. It needs Panaflo 120 mm in the back and 92 mm in the front 2. It needs McMaster fan mounts 5801K6 and 5801K8 3. It most likely needs a Fortron P300XFPN 300W PSU ($27.00 Newegg) 4. It needs grills cut out in front and ...

Is Antec Overture a good server case?

Hello everybody, I've been waiting and waiting for p160 to arrive but it seems it will never happen. So I'm having alternative thoughts for my server project. Would an Overture be a good candidate for a home server (mail server, file server, etc.) - basically working 24/7. I don't have a lot of stuf...
