This is what I heard back from Seagate and its a little scary. I am totally surprised by this answer. Hello Mr. XXXXXX, If the drive just sits dormant, it should not be expected to function. It could be as little as a 2 or 3 month period of time that it will no longer function correctly. Regards, Ru...

I am worried about stiction and what will happen to bearing lubricants over a long period of time. I might email Seagate and see what they have to say on the matter. If I hear a reply I will post back.

I am going to purchase the ST30NF next week as the fans in my current PSU are killing me. I had concerns about the reliability of a passive PSU but SilverStone's 3 year warranty, and some of the comments in this forum by SST Guy have put my mind at ease. Actually I have to thank SST Guy for posting ...

New RISC OS Machine Coming Soon
I spotted this on OSNews.com The Inq pays attention to Advantage Six' upcoming A9 Home machine. "AdvantageSix's new machine is a tiny blue fanless aluminium box about the size of a couple of floppy drives - 168x103x53mm. The A9 Home is a sealed unit - it comes with 128MB RAM and a notebook-size 40GB...

I am looking for information on the 160GB Seagate 7200.9 and hoping SPCR will review the dive. At least one person in the forum has had a bad experience with the single platter 160GB model. Stating it is very loud with a audible wine. http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=26010&highlight=...

And while we live in a Windows-centered world, it's good to know that similar utilities are also available for the Linux community. Your note suggests a number of utilities are available for the GNU/Linux community. Would you care to elaborate, an update to the article would be nice. So far in this...

Convection cooled Macs
Hi, I want to create a list of silent Macs, preferably those using convection rather than fans for cooling. The first Macs - the 128K and the 512K had no hard drives and were convection cooled like the Cubes and early iMacs. The following models can be considered for silent computing. Classic Macs M...

I cant believe I ever put up with screamers like the fop32 I used to OC my duron back in 2001. I want a quiet pc that I can work on and not hear the wine of fans. I often leave my machine on at night and need it to be dead quiet as I am a light sleeper. Well so far I have not achieved a silent pc bu...

Kostik please update CPU Power
CPU Power is probably the best tool on the net for calculating cpu heat dissipation. Unfortunately its starting to show its age and is in need of an update. I would like to see this neat little program made current again with the addition of newer processors such as the Athlon64, Prescott and Pentiu...

G4 power consumption?
I have become interested in Apples G4 Cube as it is passively cooled. I wonder how much power the device draws and how many watts of heat the processor must dissipate through convection. I know a very complete list of Processor Electrical Specifications exists for x86 cpu's but what about ppc? http:...

A faster option is the Athlon XP-M that can be underclocked and undervolted to be passively cooled. I have an old unlocked Athlon XP 2500+ (not mobile) that I runn passively at XP 1500 speed, and this seems to be the top speed that someone manages to run passively. Thanks for your reply silvervarg ...

Currently I am running an AthlonXP 1800+ which I am sure can be underclocked/undervolted to dissipate between 10-20w of heat. Could someone recommend a good heatsink that could dissi...

the_smell you make a good point. I have also considered undervolting a more powerful cpu to achieve lowered power dissipation. My problem is I don't know how much heat a good heatsink can dissipate withought the need for a fan. I suspect it might be in the range of 10-20w but would like to hear from...

MikeC you say the Via C3 can tolerate high temperatures, do you have any idea what the max temp is. I would like to know what temperature range it can operate at safely. I was intrigued to see reviews on this site where the temps exceeded 70c at load. Can it go much higher than that for extended per...

Passive CPU cooling... what to chose?
Could anyone give me an idea of the maximum power dissipation that can be safely removed by a quality heatsink. My aim it to build a silent pc that requires no cpu or case fans. I would consider integrating a fanless psu if it did not generate too much heat. Speed is not a huge issue as long as I ca...

Geforce2 Pro power dissapation?
Does anybody know the power consumption and heat dissapation of an old school Geforce2 Pro? I mainly want to know for interests sake, but want to compare the figures to a more modern 9600XT.
