It seems a little ridiculous to me that some brands of HDs could be mounted obliquely and others couldn't. I think what's more realistic is that some manufacturors are just trying to limit their liability. Why ridiculous? If it needs modifications to achieve (or even just testing to validate that i...

In general, notebook drives are designed to take more "rough & tumble" than desktop dives, but are assumed to have a shorter life span due to the fact that notebooks tend to get replaced more frequently than desktops (looks, battery life, left-on-train syndrome etc.)

But when you created the zip file, you needed to do it from an installation of windows with a path of d:\windows because ini files and registry keys reference files/sub directories in the windows directory. You can definitely PXE boot XP embedded, I've seen it done. I'm not sure about full versions of XP (planning to try though when I get enough free time) I can't immediately see anything to stop it working -provided you have enough RAM .

Laptop drives don't seem to care about their orientation at all any more; I have a tablet PC where the HD (virtually) never has a plane parallel to the horizontal (or within 15 degrees) and it's still running fine after 2+ years.

Seek times are less important if the data that you need to read (or write) is placed contiguously on the disc. Command queing and large caches also help. i.e. if you need to read four sectors place randomly on the disc, then you have to perform four seeks, and your fast seeking drive has an average ...

You're using the wrong version of DOSLFNBK; see http://www8.pair.com/dmurdoch/programs/doslfnbk.htm -Your need version 2.3 for disks formatted in FAT-32, or 2.5 for drives larger than 2GB formatted in FAT-16. Don't worry about DBLSPACE.BIN, you shouldn't need it for what you're doing

That's actually what the person in the thread you linked to did, actually -- the CF was used simply to hold the initial OS image, which creates a ram disk, installs the OS image into the ram disk, then runs off of that instead of the CF card. So, that's why the "less than a minute" comment was sort...

Given the platter density, and these benchmarks, I'd say the 8 is better than anything else in its price range for video work righ...

I'd love to know where their USB device power consumption is coming from; +5V, 500mA* equals a power draw of 5W...

*Yes, I know that laptops often allow more than 500mA for CD drives, but they're the exception and I believe that they all negotiate that, rather than the laptop just supplying it.

Perhaps most worryingly about the pioneers is their data corruption bug (when the drive experiences a read error, rather than reporting that, it substitutes random data). My take on the manufacturing situation is that whoever pays for the testing "made" the product, because they are the ones that set the rules for what gets shipped or fixed. Take this scenario; company A wants to create a product that they only have a overall concept for. So they contract the design ...
