In general, notebook drives are designed to take more "rough & tumble" than desktop dives, but are assumed to have a shorter life span due to the fact that notebooks tend to get replaced more frequently than desktops (looks, battery life, left-on-train syndrome etc.)

You can definitely PXE boot XP embedded, I've seen it done. I'm not sure about full versions of XP (planning to try though when I get enough free time) I can't immediately see anything to stop it working -provided you have enough RAM .

Command queing and large caches also help. i.e. if you need to read four sectors place randomly on the disc, then you have to perform four seeks, and your fast seeking drive has an average ...
