I'm not impressed with the factory fans--they're not particularly quiet and have the large 4-pin connectors with no RPM sensor. Later I'm going to rewire them with 3-pin connectors and hook them to the fanmate so I can reduce the RPM and see what that does. It sounds like the noise they're making i...

I like the simplicity of the foam option, but I suppose there isn't much hope of silencing more than one drive this way. I must admit, setting a hard drive upside down and on foam seems frighteningly casual to me. My hard drives usually demand that I sacrifice birds to them or they'll go pfft. But ...

use foam to mount
remove the antec brackets and use 0.5inchx0.5inchx1.5inch foam blocks to mount your fans. Simply compress the foam through the holes necessary. Works almost as well as rubber mounts i think.

i have done this with a p3 450 oc'd to 550 w/ 4 80 GBHD's and 2 NIC's. My PSU got too hot after a couple of hours (PC is in a closet running linux so the CPU is always fed HLT saving power). Right now the PSU is cooled with a Panaflo M1A running @ 5v from the molex power connectors (I snaked the fan...

I worked at EMC whose business is storage. They were selling 32 TB boxes with rounded cables. They had 40 or so of these 32 TB boxes running linux 2.4 and no real issues with rounded cables. The quality of the cable didnt seem spectacular and we had more errors from bad drives/molex power connectors...

1. 1st generation 10k rpm 4.8 GB cheetah.
2. These 2 maxtor 80 GB 5400 diamondmax HDs from 2 years ago are EXTREMELY whiny. Almost as bad as the cheetah. Luckily they store "data" *cough* warez *cough* on a linux server in the closet and are off most of the time.

Hi katana man, I am about to get a fortron fsp350 with the 120mm fan facing down. In my chieftec dragon style case, there are 2 7v fans pulling air out at the back and 1 7v pushing air over hd in the front. What should I do to maintain +ve air pressure? It would seem silly to make all fans intakes o...

how is your case fan mounted with rubber bands? pics and explanation would be nice. Is there a fan sucking in air from the duct? Thought about PSU ducts? Im going to build a duct since I cant afford nice quiet $$$$ components and see what happens.

i have an ibm deathstar 60 gb 7200 rpm running @ 38C in a 30C case. I have thermal pasted the sides of the drive and attached PART of a 3.5 to 5.25 bay adapter to it. how about measuring where the fan leads are sodered the thermal control pcb? positive pressure
positive pressure is largely a myth. Ralf Hutter is a big proponent of it being poopoo, and my own experience has shown no difference in temperatures with positive presssure or not. I run a 1 front fan to cool the HD and 3 fans exhausting (incl PSU). If your case fan is sucking all the air out, slow...

What method do u use?
Hi rusty,
What method do u use? I'm curious since some people like a super thin layer while others use a bit thicker layer and then "rub" the mating surfaces.

Hi, I own a Shuttle AK-31v3 KT266A based motherboard. I cannot seem to remove the chipset heatsink (it seems to be glued on). 7V vs 5v
5v mods are fine as they use the +5V line with the -5V ground. You just switch the wires around as Putz suggested earlier on. The 7V mods use the +12V line and the +5V line as ground. (12-5=7). If you have a short in your fan, your 12V and 5V supply lines are connected. This could cause bad things i...

i have modified my setup for 7v by switching the 5V and 12V ground lines as described above. All fans are run off of 1 branch of the wires. I have wrapped these wires with yellow electrical tape so as not to plug in an HD into one of these accidentally. In any case, the reason you reccomend using di...

Trinity X-31, Neo, or Noblesse
I had a bunch of Q's since I like the way these cases look. Any reason the X-31 is more popular than the other 2?
