Nope. It's irrelevant to the gamers. What's one thing a non-gaming, internet-browsing, word-processing home user does that a Matrox card can't give him? Availability, price, modern drivers, support, good useability in all situations. In fact, matrox is more expensive for a budget video card now. Ma...

Re: Seasonic Vs Corsair
Considering they're both seasonic and use the same fans. I doubt there's much difference, just variations of the fans/circuitry. Anything else is just speculation.miTchy wrote:which is quietest

Re: Seasonic S-12 no good...whats next best option
I got the S-12, 380W and while the fan is very quiet...the darn thing buzzes! I had it out of the case while troubleshooting and it was quite evident this was the source. Some other members seem to have the same issue. Sooo...I just want something of comparable quietness, probably in the 300W or so...

There isn't really anything particularly crazy. It's just a dual chip platform for people who want that kind of thing. Obviously a waste of power to most of us and completely pointless for most apps. It's really a stopgap until the Native Quad Core K8L is finally released. Then it'll be the madness ...

What type of bearing is the Noctua "SSO Bearing"? It appears to be some kind of hydrodynamic bearing: http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=sso_bearing&lng=en It always makes me wonder why some manufacturer pushing harder on fluid or other exotic bearings. It sounds like some of these are quieter and ...

Aren't they going to have a new, more reasonably sized DX10 design out early next year? Of course! How else are they gonna have low and mid-range choices for DX10 when Vista comes out? Nvidia and ATI have at least 3 codenames each for the first DX10 generation. I can bet it'll be called 8600 and 82...

Re: Laptop as a minimalist PC?
Kind of curious how many people are using a laptop as their main computer. To me, they seem like the perfect minimalist systems: Just the essential features, low-power, small size, etc. Sure, they aren't silent, but most are very quiet, quiet enough IMO, although I may not be quite as picky about n...

I am certainly new to this forum, and this topic may have been discussed in previous threads, but I am not having much luck finding them, so here goes: What is up with PC Power & Cooling?? I always hear that that they have great products, and I have been using a Silencer 400 ATX for a few years now...

Fantastic article, it was a thoroughly good read :D However, I too am sad that the Yate Loon, Globalwin NCB and Sharkoon fans could not be included. UK silence seekers can find the Scythe and Noctua fans fairly easily on Ebay, along with the Yate Loons. However, they are almost prohibitively expens...

Hey Qviri, I have shopped in Ikea, heatsink buying is easier and more fun :) Qviri has a very good point, heatsinks only fall into 3 categories. The VERY good ones, that are expensive. The good ones that are inexpensive. And the crap that you get when you buy your CPU. Andy You forgot a few other c...

If you are using an AMD system, then the Alpine is highly recommended, its cheap, quiet and cools better than the AMD retail HS/F. If you want cooler and quieter then you are going to need to spend more cash. The Alpine is very good value for money for an aftermarket HS/F. Andy I think you kinda mi...

Lack of Full Featured Quiet Budget Heatsink Selection
I've noticed one major issue that affects me when recommending a cheap heatsink to someone who's not a huge computer addict, there's really not many choices out there. I can look down the sprc recommendations list and almost every heatsink is over $30 and usually around $50. The number of people who...

This is why synthetic benchmarks like 3dMark are good to have, they give some idea of how current cards will work with games released in the near future. Try running 3dMark06 on 2560x1600 with HDR+AA+AF on a 8800GTX, it's slow as hell, though it does look pretty amazing. If you play at 1280x1024 or...

Nothing wrong with wanting a silent 1kW PSU, it's more the idea of wanting a 1kW PSU in the first place. Power(heat, not processing power) is the enemy of a quiet computer. If you are going to use three 8800GTXs and dual quadcores, you might be needing a 1kW PSU. 3x185W+2x130W=815W, and then some f...

I think that Matrox is slower than my card(16mb vs my 128mb, etc etc). =P In all likelihood. But it has the best dual-head driver out there, if you care to look at it. This is interesting: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271 According to dear jonny, a psu has to supply a minimum of 60A to the 12V rails in order to certify for 8800GTX in Sli. The M12-700 is excluded because it "only" has 56A on the 12V rails. 720W from just the 12V rail(s)? That s...

Re: 8800 GTX not loud at all
Ok I screwed up I connected my 8800 GTX using speedfan and forgot I had it set to 100% fan speed, duh :-( I unistalled fanspeed and just ran it normal. Well this card is as quiet as the stock 7900 GTX fan :-) Even after playing BF2 for a couple of hours it never went into high speed :-) So its very...

Perhaps the M12-700, although technically able to cope with two 8800GTX's in Sli wasn't certified by nVidia as it was really noisy when running them? Thats the impression that the jonnyguru review gives: That is definitely wrong. Many psu's are far louder than the M12-700 at something far under the...

I would go with what nVidia recommends. Spec sheets don't always translate to reality, and I assume nVidia has actually tested those combinations. Perhaps two 8800GTX's in sli create particular power demands that may de-stabilise the power output of the M12-700 in real life? Who knows. I recently g...

I can see where the motherboard and CPU might be a little more loaded in SLI, but I think the 200 watt figure can be accounted for in power supply inefficiency. Their figures are measured at the wall plug. As much as I would absolutely love playing Oblivion with that card I don't think I could live...

Some sites are saying that the 8800GTX is surprisingly quiet.. be interesting to find out just how quiet. Well tech report states that it's actually quieter than the 7900GTX stock fan at load(check out the review and chart)..which is already amazingly quiet at load. It's one kick ass stock setup. I...

I was thinking of replacing my X1800XL for an X1950 XT (256) or X1950 XTX (512). I have a Seasonic S12-500 right now with an overclocked C2D at 1.3125V and Ram at 2.1V. Honestly, you guys are both wrong and looking at things from the wrong way. First of all, any psu or fan in a case can be changed, those should not be important for discussion UNLESS you're talking about a purely stock case. Cases most certainly have different noises depending on sound dampening, ha...
