Higher peak on the 12 volt rail and it looks like the 300W model is now black as well. Whether they're quieter remains to be seen.
I remember MikeC mentioned he had some new Zalman PSUs ready to be reviewed in the coming weeks. I assume he's referring to the APS.

Sounds consistent with the power specs (comparing 7200.7 with P80):
Code: Select all

Seek 12.5 8.6
Read/Write 12 7.1

Sephiroth Computers lists them, although when I placed an order they weren't in stock and it wouldn't arrive in time for the assembly of my new system, so I had to cancel. I haven't had any experience buying from them before so I can't comment on their service.

Artic Cooling VGA Silencer review @ Dan's Data
http://www.dansdata.com/vgasilencer.htm Basically your standard review, although Dan finally bought himself an SPL meter--soon every hardware site is going to have one. The most interesting things in the review were actually links to other pages. One to an NVidia FlowFX parody video , and another to...

Well, this one's already been mentioned here :D But I found the discrepancy in power consumption between the boards interesting as well. The trouble is they dont specify that is was the exact same setup--the boards could've been in different systems which could account for much of the power usage. O...

The noise wasn't really pronounced in your wav sample, but from what you describe, perhaps it's "bearing chatter"? A lot of my fans eventually (often after only a few months) make a noise that could be described as rattling, scraping, hard disk-like clicking, or basically like a rickety old rust-buc...

Shadowknight stressed the importance of the warranty and I just want to back him up on that one. Having just had a notebook die on me, albeit under warranty, I now recognise the fact that most laptops are nothing like desktops in terms of servicing. You often can't just remove the one faulty compone...

AnandTech roundup with noise & temp measurements
New mid-high end video card roundup at Anandtech with noise and temperature comparisons:

Not sure how good their methodology is, but it's nice to see the big hardware sites paying attention to these areas.

About a week ago I e-mailed Albatron and Soltek regarding Cool 'n' Quiet support on their Athlon 64 boards since I was thinking of buying one. I never heard back from Albatron, but did get a reply from a Soltek rep who didn't know what I was referring to until I linked him to the CnQ page at AMD's s...

What an awful waste is Prescott. All that extra power consumption with virtually no performance gain. Maybe SSE3 will have some use, but I suspect the main purpose of this CPU is to enable Intel to ramp up their clock speed for marketing purposes. Looking beyond the CPUs themselves, I found the comp...

Tom's Hardware has long trumpeted low-latency RAM but a recent comparison at his site showed, somewhat surprisingly, that it doesn't matter so much on the current fastest platforms: http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040119/index.html On a related note, while researching components for my new...

There seems to be at least two different kinds of monitor noise--the high-pitched squeal from the power supply that some TVs make, and a screen-related buzzing noise that sounds more like a buzzing insect. My 17" Hewlett-Packard LCD (with external brick PSU) as well as my aperture grille CRTs suffer...

This may be too late for you, but perhaps it will be useful to others. I received an iBook G4 several weeks ago (the 800Mhz 12" model). I have to agree with SPCR's asessment of the SilentDrive. I bought one a couple of years back from quietpc.com (in an uncanny coincidence, the rant e-mail I sent to quietpc about it is marked "4 Jul 2001", so it's been two years exactly :o) and even back then when it was considered the best (only?) ...

Mike, just wondering about the fuss that was made about the Seagate Momentus on the home page? I don't know all that much about notebook drives, but when you look at the specs of competing drives, the "just 2.4W" figure doesn't look all that worthy of bold type and an exclamation mark, let alone its...

Mike, do you have access to an EPIA board you can do some power measurements on? This recent Dan's Data review had some scathing things to say about the power consumption of the platform: Given that the 400MHz Celeron is roughly equal with the M10000 machine for performance, there wouldn't appear to...

The easiest and safest way to make most Radeon cards (specifically, the ones that have the type of cooler that the original All-in-Wonder Radeon has) quieter is to get a quiet 50mm fan (e.g. Papst) and some small self-tapping screws. Unscrew the old 45mm fan and unplug it from the card, using a pin ...

If the performance meets your requirements, your best bet may be to simply go with a GeForce4 MX card which is completely silent to start with. Most of ASUS's V8170 series as well as the newer V9180 Magic are fanless, and there are some other brands out there which are as well. Check what's availabl...
