Hmmm, drive sandwiched with slabs of aluminum - now just a larger, more massive drive with the same whine and more mass vibrating. What physics principle do you think is working for you here? Presuming the whine is due to bearing noise, you need acoustical absorption material to deal with it, and yo...

I personally think this Fiskars Rotary Cutter is a perfect device for cutting things like sorbothane, plastic sheets, etc. and yes, use a large straight-edge with it. It's mainly used in the sewing & quilting crafts.

3700AMB and Firewire
I've recently built 3 machines with the 3700AMB case and like it a lot. Now I need to build one with a Firewire port in front. Any suggestions as to the most reasonable to accomplish this with the AMB case?

It's really quite hard (even in Baltimore) to generate 12VAC or 24VAC. On the other hand there are quite a few very good 120VAC fans that are quiet - not silent. They generally move 50CFM and up, and no real fan or bearing noise (benefit of AC drive) but do have a fair bit of air whoosh. Panasonic a...

Here's a suggestion - go to www.acehardware.com, and do a search on "air filters" and you will get about 50 choices, many of which will provide material that will work just fine for your needs...

I guess I don't understand the point of your post (except the last question re: Panaflo fans.) I use quite a few Papst 4412's and they are all effectively silent when operating at 7v. The one Antec I had (came with the 3700AMB) clicked like crazy at 7v. But all that matters is your perception and wh...

I have used a number of their 300 and 350w supplies (pre-SATA connectors) and found them to be wonderful. I wouldn't consider them "silent" as far as what people here try to achieve, but one of the "quiet/quality" supplies for a good machine. They are one of the highest quality and consistant qualit...

Well, when idle the disk does periodically run self-test, and this always results in some random seeking noise. Not sure if that's what you are hearing. Try letting your machine set in the bios setup screen for awhile. does it make the noise then? If so, disconnect the disk and see if it still makes...

Heat doesn't just dissipate - you need "airflow", especially to those spots you want to carry heat away from (like the CPU heatsink). So, in a fanless system, you want to create some method of "guiding" cooler air to the hotspots, and then have enough clear flow for it to exit upwards (out of the to...

Operating power isn't much - figure about 15w max for each drive (12v). Startup is another story - each drive will draw about 2.5-3 amps (12v) for about 5-8 seconds on startup. However, most supplies don't mind some amount of overcurrent for a brief time, so any supply that has 15-20 amps of 12v cur...

Thank you for taking the time to reply
I understand each of your points, and agree that this case is not for me. I've been very happy with the 3700AMB, but would (unlike you) prefer a somewhat smaller case. I never need more than a single 5-1/4 device (DVD recorder) and 2 HD units and one PCI (once in a while, two), so much of the "roomi...
