Personally i think it will e a while before desktops are gone. They won't disappear completely, but my guess is that they will be about 10~15% of annual PC sales within 3-4 years. If we are unlucky enough the PC gaming-scene might largely die off to consoles though. Games are already released to co...

it makes me sad that large desktops are phasing out. I love my desktop! However, the statement doesn't surprise me...it's already looking like I will never own an ATX board after this one. Thanks for the article...it was interesting. As an engineering student, I was recently lucky enough to have be...

RoGuE, DAve_M, rpsgc, ATWindsor -- Please, let's just agree to disagree. I think both sides have made their valid points abundantly clear. My assessment of the 1005HA was on its overall merits, not only noise, which I felt (and still do, having used it earlier this morn) is quiet enough even though...

Everywhere you can show me a fan-less design, I can show you reasons why. The fact remains that Asus weighed their options, and chose to include a fan to keep temperatures in check. Comparing different net-books doesn't help your argument. Like I said earlier, different chip-sets, different mass an...

It's an enclosure for electronics that is both thin and lightweight, yes, and now I am getting back to you. Well? And it has a Core 2 Solo or a Core 2 Duo, not a puny underpowered Atom. I was talking about a FANLESS enclosure. The laptop in your picture (unlabeled) most certainly has a centrifugal ...

older/different netbooks can't be compared to easily. Did you take into consideration that newer cpus and chipsets tend to get hotter in return for faster processing? sigh... have you actually listened to what 24 dBA/0.6 sounds like? This is ~19 dBA/1m. Trust me, it's quiet. I couldn't have said it...

Nothing in your testimony seems to contradict what we're saying. That this isn't engineered for silence or extreme quietness is exactly the point, and I can see why. I just wish it was; it wouldn't be particularly hard or add any overwhelming amount of weight or cost. Seriously..? the whole thing c...

Frankly i find 24 dBA at 0,6 meter to be pretty bad for a unit with such a minuscule power draw. It should be pretty easy to do better. sigh... have you actually listened to what 24 dBA/0.6 sounds like? This is ~19 dBA/1m. Trust me, it's quiet. Whats up with the attitude? Yes, I have on numerous oc...

Mike, thanks for the expanded comments. I'd be interested if someone could comment whether eeectl or other software can control the fan RPMs (and if so, how hot do things get running passive). Your comments regarding locations where netbooks would be used are fair enough - but personally I can also...

Two signals of identical sound pressure level (SPL) will add together to +6dB, two uncorrelated signals with same SPL will add together to + 3dB AtW Acctually the signals themselvs have to be identical for that to happen. In an electronic circuit (like a mixer) or in a DAW 2 identical 12db signals added together=15db but in the real world this is never the case since the sound sources are not identical nor are they emited from the same location and differ in distance from the listener or microphone. Phase cancelatio...

I case you are interested, i tried my new i7 920 system, fan at 600 rpm, prolima megahalems, pretty hot insde due to summer, i reach 68 degrees in speedfan after 30 minutes of prime 95. Just to get this straight, the "smooth and quiet 20 dbA" was achieved when you had the cooling capacity to run full load? So one could envision a setup where it is as quiet ass possible most of the time (when its not on full load), but it ramps up to "smooth and quiet" on full load? I set the fan s...

This thread is making me think that quiet-as-possible pc and the Intel i7 just don't mix. Without careful planning and selection of all the components, you're right. Even with, it's a big challenge. I'm not sure i am following you? At 700 rpm (7 V approx), the HR-01 is a better cooler than the TRUE on the pentium, it should be a better cooler at 7V for a i920 too? Regardless of CPU, the cooler will dissipate the same amount of heat with the same fanspeed, and same difference between cooler-tem...

Several points: 1) the HR-01's fairly large size combined with low airflow impedance makes it really efficient with very low airflow. 2) However, with very low airflow, the HR-01 has fairly modest cooling capability relative to today's hottest processors. This cooler with low speed Nexus does well ...

I found this on xbitlabs yet again, here the seem to have done pretty advanced power measurements, and they qoute CPU power for the 920 to be 20 W idle and 120 W load

In tother words in the 40-50 range of temps. Yes, if your calculation is correct, then at 12V the same fan should be 40C over ambient, so 40C+26C=66C when it fact it is 76C. Now it was originally at 7V, and with 24C ambient it should have been 43C+24C=67C, but in fact it was 80C. So 10C hotter than...

Do you mean that the OPs cooling system is under-performing compared to what is expected? Well the OP did mention an ambient temperature of 24. It was not said what the ambient temperature was when 76C was recorded. If we assume that it was 26C, then 76C-26C=50C over ambient. Look up the SPCR revie...
