They've all still got fans on them... You can probably find an old ATI 2600 for cheap these days, and it will still do hardware decoding of HD content. I've got one at home thhat came passive for under $40 on sale (regular price was ~$55).

Have you tried connecting only the WD drive? I'm wondering if the PCI card you have can't handle auto negotiation on individual drives (i.e. the ports come in pairs).

Just make sure that the fan will actually start at 5V. Otherwise you might have to get a little more fancy with your homebrew circuit design.

A quality rotary tool (Dremel or the like) should be able to cut through a motherboard tray without too much trouble. I've used mine to cut out the restrictive fan grilles in the back of cases a number of times, and I'd imagine that the thickness of the metal is comparable for the two.

I'll second the GP drives. They're relatively fast, quiet, and so far haven't given me any troubles. I've got 10 of them in my server, and yet the overall noise level is quite low.

I'll second the Klipsch speakers. I upgraded from Altec Lansing ATP3's (which I still use at work now - 6 years and still going!) and the difference was incredible.

I have the 3650 because I use three monitors. The 4670 wasn't available at the time (would have been slightly more ideal), and the price of the 3650 was rediculously low ($40 CAD) for a passive card.

I remember seeing someone use these fans on the T-Rad2 somewhere... but I can't seem to find the link. Even if you couldn't screw them in, you'd probably be able to use the stock mounting holes in conjunction with a few zip-ties.

I actually ran into a minor stability issue with that setting. I currently have my Vcore set to 1.225V in BIOS, and my NB voltage set to 1.37V. My RAM voltage is set to auto at the moment, which the BIOS has decided will be 2.0V. So far, things look pretty good.

I've also ordered a trial version of WHS since MS gives it out on a 120 day trial. I expect it wont be that ideal for the low power server, but it wont cost me anything to try it out if debian annoys me. Why wouldn't it be ideal? WHS is the best setup you could hope for if you're only dealing with ...
