MSI 875: Underclockable with "CoreCell" Technology
Just reading HardwareZone's review of the MSI Neo-2 875P-FIS2R. Its one of the least expensive 875P boards you can buy. And this is the "cool" part: It is one of the most adjustable ("overclockable" in the words of HardwareZone) motherboards they've ever reviewed. Some numbers: System bus speed : 10...

Panaflo 80s should start at 7V, most at 5V. You can use the L1A for most heatsink applications, provided you are using a good heatsink. For Socket-A, see: http://www.silentpcreview.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=47&page=1 For Pentium 4, see: http://www.sile...

I can imagine how much a notebook would save on power comsumption and hence save you $$$ every year on your electricity bill. :D Plus you can stick it in a docking station, drill a whole in the back of the drawer in your desk for cables, and stick the whole darn thing in the drawer! Now that's Sile...

Couple of thoughts: 1) Don't try to take notes in class on a laptop. Unless you type at an absolutely superhuman/super-secretarial speed, you won't be able to keep up. "Short-hand" computer notes don't work, as they are often too diffucult to decipher and a single mistroke can leave an entire sectio...

Generally speaking, modern power plants aren't really culprits in industrial pollution. The only exceptions are those of us in the east and midwest who still get power from fossil fuels (coal and oil -- might be more wide-spread, this is just my impression). Those are obviously producing pollutants ...

Re: Western Digital Raptor?
Hello: I only know what I've read on Storage Review, and the WD Raptor (10K RPM, SATA, 8MB cache, fluid bearings -- it looks to be a pretty intimidating drive. It's very fast (its up in the higher SCSI range), and fairly quiet (I'd say in the lower third of all drives). I don't know about that quie...

LG Electronics GCE-8520B (BI is retail, BB is bulk). 52x24x52. Supports Mt. Rainier. Can't say that its quiet with a ton of confidence BUT I have the predecessor 48x GCE-8481BB (which I bought on the advice of MikeC) and it is a very quiet drive. Mine doesn't support native Mt. Rainier, but I use Ea...

Re: mmm
thanks ez, but i dont have any hardware for monitoring hd temps. Cuda V's have SMART information that is read by the system board and can be accessed via Windows using the right software (see other posts above). You don't need special hardware -- the drive already contains all the hardware you need.

because id pay that much, maybe more, for a silent pc. ie no fans, silent hd (solid state?), rubber mounted true-x cdrom etc in a sinlge unit (ie not water)...
would anyone else ?
Well, when you put it that way, I would! Absolutely!

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Serial ATA drive review at EnvyNews
EnvyNews.com reviewed a production sample of the new Serial ATA version of the Maxtor DiamondMax +9 (6YxxxM0). It performed really well in comparison to the other drives he tested (Cuda V PATA, Cuda V SATA, Maxtor 740DXL PATA, Maxtor DM+9 PATA). Plus, its quiet. For what its worth, the reviewer at E...

AnandTech als did a very comprehensive look at this drive, comparing it to all the leading IDE drives and 2 10K SCSIs. It didn't do very well at all, because Anand didn't stop with synthetic benchmarks, but recorded read-write commands to the drive and the drive's performance with them during "suite...

I would think about which has the best weight/cost ratio. Heavier = better sound deadening. I don't want to be an instigator, but heavier won't necessarily equal better sound deadening. For the most part that's true, but long-story-short, a "softer" metal will deaden better than a "harder" one beca...

I think I see what your driving at: incorporating silence into the system design (like I'm trying to do), but not for yourself. Of course you don't want to know how much more WE would SPEND for a quiet PC, but how much WE think a quiet PC is WORTH compared to a comparable non-quiet model. Think of i...

The SR review doesn't look at the 80GB variety, so its only marginally useful on the topic. However, the quietest and coolest Maxtor they looked at was the 160GB with 2 80G platters. So an 80G with 1 platter ought to be slightly quieter and cooler still. This is the drive that I have my eye on. If y...
