Yeah, that's what I was wondering whether there would be enough local interest for it myself. I do live in a big city, but in a fairly small suburb on its outskirts, and I wouldn't want to advertise all over the city as it's expensive and not worth me travelling long distances for what would essenti...

Selling your PC silencing expertise in your local community?

Has anyone tried using their silencing expertise gathered here to make a bit of money in the evenings/weekends? I'm talking about putting an ad in your local paper/supermarket that advertises you as a consultant who can quieten people's PCs for them. You would do an initial consultation for free, an...

Pesky PSU doesn't have a through port for the monitor power cable, so i'm an available plug down from when i started. I think Maplins sell a power strip that automatically powers up the other sockets when the PC is plugged into the main one. That way you can have all your other peripherals such as ...

Great, thanks for the info. I think it's time I replaced my cardboard duct with a plastic felt-lined one. I bit more professional and quieter! I'll also look for some foam to line my side panels with. Mainly for reducing resonance inside the case (as my HDDs are all suspended and fans are both gromm...

Another ingenious engineering solution by Bluefront! 8)

You've mentioned in another post you line your ducts with some kind of damping material to reduce resonance casued by the duct itself. What do you use and where do you get it from? And do you line your case panels with the same stuff?

Quite a useful article, although this quote made me laugh: Although this shootout compares two entirely different platforms and literally compares apples and oranges, What the heck are they doing an article on fruit for? :D  It also demonstrates yet again that even high powered gaming systems ...

Thanks for your replies so far guys, the poll shows Thunderbird as a clear winner. However it doesn't seem to be getting the sort of mass coverage in the press as Firefox, and it doesn't seem to be such a simple choice to migrate from Outlook (compared to ditching IE for FF). Outlook is a great prog...

Best (Windows) Email Client?

I've always stuck to Outlook, simply because I haven't tried anything else for ages and it comes with my version of Office. It works fine for my purposes but somewhat bloated for basic home use.

What does anyone else use/recommend and why?

I remember in a post ages ago Bluefront had managed to rotate the HT-101 through 90 degrees by making two very simple mounting plates for it. Couldn't find the post though. But in fact you could still use the HT-101 with a rear exhaust fan in the wrong orientation if you remove the shroud and fan. T...

Yes, the Aerocool HT-101 comes with the 3-pronged clip mounting mechanism for Socket A mobos, and I would certainly recommend it. And I run mine passively on my XP2400+ (although it's very close to my 120mm fanned PSU).

I think some of the more radical suggestions mentioned might be a bit extreme, especially if you haven't heard of them (and if you are not a highly experienced modder), so to go back to your original question, I think option 2 should be sufficient. The difference between the two systems in noise wou...

I have the Aerocool HT-101 which works pretty well. Massive improvement over my previous Thermalright SLK-800A. Dunno how it compares with the latest generation though.

One advantage it has it that it is quite light, so the cantilever force isn't too bad compared with some of the heavyweights.

Any luck with getting it to boot? Once you've got that sorted, please post some pics of your setup! I agree with Isaac though, you shouldn't need the front fan even if only one exhaust fan is pulling air through the bottom half of the case. Make sure the HDD is close to the intake and monitor temps....

That looks pretty good actually. Should be cool as a cucumber. If you're not worried about dust/filters, you shouldn't need intake fans either.

As long as the ribbon cable is long enough, cablegami it out of the way to keep it out of the airflow.

Two things to bear in mind when making ducts: 1) They can resonate, increasing fan noise considerably. So take care with materials, and relative position of fans. Also keep them as short as possible. 2) The flexible tube you refer to is normally ribbed and uneven. This causes turbulence which greatl...

Two prototype Zalman cases at Cebit Sydney

Don't know if these have been discussed before, but at Cebit in Sydney yesterday I saw two new Zalman cases that are rather interesting. One is the Fatal1ty, which has a large unrestricted 120mm intake (quite high up) and grommet mounted hard drives on the bottom of the case. It's finished in the sa...

Yes, I'm sure it would. Due to the limited space inside (i.e. no room for a tall tower heatsinks) it would be cool to run heatpipes out the back to a passive external heatsink. Maybe a project for the future.... The recently unveiled Xbox 360 has heatpipe cooling (although they call it water cooling...

So to sum it up: in the real world the Nexus is the quietest 120mm fan you can buy. Simple as that. They aren't the only fan to buy as they are low airflow so not suitable for all applications, but for most SPCR'ers they are enough. my two Nexus 120mms are the only fans in my entire system, and I ru...

Yeah, I agree with sundevil and think you should use your existing case first. Then after a few months of use you may decide to get a better case, but it sounds as if you are going to have to mod it anyway, as there aren't many cases that will do what you want off the shelf. But as sundevil says, vi...
