I'm no expert on this but I've read that Intel's X4500 graphics is better than Nvidia for HD playback (but not as good for 3D gaming). Is this only going to be used as an HTPC? Also, reading some of the customer reviews at Newegg, they mention the audio and wireless on that motherboard are poor. You...

Looks like OCZ is about to release new firmware for the Vertex drives. The interesting thing is that it includes idle time garbage collection so TRIM implementation and performance degradation will no longer be an issue.

It is a fast moving industry, so I wouldn't be surprised if they've solved a few problems. I wonder how garbage collection is handled on these drives?

Anyway, at least you're aware of some of the issues now, so you can make your decisions accordingly. Let's hope you're onto a winner!

Surely they'd let you send it back if the packaging is intact? The cheapest one worth buying is the G.Skill Falcon but I think you get a shorter warranty and less support than with the OCZ Vertex . One of the things with SSDs which you may have realised, is that they are bleeding edge technology. Th...

OCZ Vertex, G.Skill Falcon, or one of the new Intels would be a better choice.

Don't know if this helps, but I made my own fan controller from a rotary switch and some diodes. I didn't set mine up with an "off" position, but that could be easily achieved by leaving one position disconnected. However, it seems that you only need a simple toggle switch, and sounds like you've go...

Windows 7 disables the scheduled automatic defrag for SSDs itself (along with SuperFetch among other things ), so that's not really a problem. Obviously for Vista you would, but most people will have Windows 7 by the time SSDs become mainstream to make this point moot. Also, Windows 7 is clever eno...

It does for every HDD I connect to the system, but none for SSDs.
There's no thermal sensor in SSDs. They generate insignificant heat so they don't need it.

I've got an E5300 with fanless Ninja Mini and the same motherboard. I have a Nexus 120mm case fan running at 600RPM which easily provides more than enough cooling, and is very quiet. Depending on the make and model, some firmware updates will completely erase and reset the drive. Manufacturers may also provide tools to completely erase drives, returning them to their raw state (eg OCZ's "sanitary erase").

As your own experiments have indicated, you don't actually need a case fan. Once the rear of the case is sealed, you will be making the most efficient use of the incoming air which will be flowing from front to back, so your temperatures should be slightly better than those obtained when you tried r...

In case you do, I may as well tell you what I would try. First, I would take the PSU out and have a close look at it. I've heard stories where a wire has been hanging down a bit and gets touched by the fan blades, causing noise. If that's not the problem, then I would remove the PSU fan and replace ...

Well I'm convinced that you've accurately located the source of the various noises in your system. The question now is, what are you going to do about it? The PSU appears to be the main culprit, and you seem to think that it is not performing the way it should. Are you able to return it and get a re...

I mention them because they do make a sound exactly like air movement. It can be deceptive if you're not familiar with it. I'm not talking about the seek noises, but the constant idle noise. With the case open, and the case fan unplugged, have you tried putting your ear next to the drives? I find it...

It was worthwhile doing the experiment, as you can see how elusive tracking down some of the noises can be. I am beginning to think that you do have very acute hearing. Because you have found out that the case fan is running smoothly, the only noise it is creating is due to air movement, which is no...

I urge you to try the experiment I suggested in the previous post. I do not expect a large rise in temperatures, and you have plenty of headroom as previously mentioned. I don't see any reason to draw a line in the sand at this point. Any loss in cooling ability will be compensated for in quietness!...
