Cool n' Quiet question and wattage question
Hey there- Two questions: 1) With CnQ, does the process stay down in wattage when you are just web browsing? Is there software that you can use to control the states in XP? 2) When overclocking, if you don't push up the voltage, what happens to the wattage? I thought it was linear. So, for example, ...

Something like this:
http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info ... cts_id/107
looks pretty interesting. The only probably I really see is I don't know what I could do for CPU cooling. I don't even think the 2" DFI setup would work.

Small PC
Well, I was thinking of trying one of these Pentium M PCs. But, if I do it, I want something <small>! The only card I'd need is a video card w/ DVI for my monitor.... otherwise, I can just run with whatever is on the motherboard. Any suggestions on small cases? I'm going to max out the ram and run e...

How many dbs shaved from closet placement?
I'm interested to know how much noise is trimmed from putting a HD in the closet. I have one about 12 feet from my machine and would be interested in moving a drive there and maybe upgrading to a raptor for more speed, but I'm not sure how much difference the closet would make.
Thanks,
Chris

AMD improves 90 nanometer for power savings/head room
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20149 "Why does it matter? The chip firms say that it will boost speeds of chips by up to a quarter using the same power levels as non-SOI chips." It looks like this is an offical announcement of speculation by overclockers.com last week. If this is true and power...

Fast Pentium-M's coming next month
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20197 According the the article, new Pentium-Ms are coming out next month including a 2.13ghz model. According to what I read before, these 533mhz bus chips will push the FPU performance up around 25-30% in the SPEC tests and will push power consumption to 27W. Ch...

Fast RAM not quite worth it?
I'm looking to upgrade my RAM and I was noticing the HUGE difference in PC3200 prices. For Cas2.5 RAM, it's about $64 for 512meg. 2-3-2-5-T1 RAM is $92 for the cheapest and the cheapest 2-2-2-5 RAM is $108. Now, I checked out Tom's and the difference between the $64 RAM and $108 (assuming it works i...

At this point, I think it's the way SAS is configured. By default the application only uses about 64megs of RAM for sorting, etc. Now, here's the real sh*t kicker. If you tell SAS to use MORE RAM then you have, the thing pukes all over the place, crashes your box and makes you reboot. Using that loa...

Couple question
It seems as if a few people here use SAS... :) Here's my questions: On this Intel document, I can't change some of the items, like MEMLIB or REALMEMSIZE... Why is that? I did a google on PAE in Windows XP and it seems like it's on by default. I guess generally, I don't know how to change these value...

Thanks for the links guys. I'll check it out. It looks like there several things I can do both in terms of settings and code to help things out. I'll play around and see what I can do but it looks like I don't need a new drive. Maybe some more ram for a ramdisk, but otherwise I should be OK. Thanks!...

If you're referring to X your regression matrix it usually has #columns = number of predictors and #rows = number of observations. For things to work, there must always be far fewer predictors than there are observations. Wow... that's embarassing. Kids, let this be a lesson to you: Don't think of ...

The problem with running regressions is that the data needs to be transformed and summarized etc. so many times that the dataset during sessions multiplies many times. More RAM will possibly only be helpful if it is large enough to contain all data when you are calculating your variables... Hm... I...

Worst Nightmare: Need more disk performance
I finished up my silent PC in February with a Samsung 160gig drive and I'm loving it's quietness... Can't hear it at idle and just a low rumble on seeks. However, I have a problem.... I'm doing a lot of data work now on my PC and the disk speed is killing me in SAS (Stat program). I just sit here th...

Just wondering the logic here of some of these systems... If you are going to put in a 6800 or like 3 fans or something, why not save a bunch of cake and get a AMD 3500+ 90nm chip?? Certainly the power consumption of the chip is a bit more and all, but it's not that bad. The P-M is nice and may be a...

Nice quote from the gamepc article: "With this in mind, we got to thinking if it would be possible to run the processor at full speed (no clock throttling) with completely passive cooling methods. Turns out that yes, the chip can be run passively, just not with the stock AOpen cooler. The AOpen alum...

Basically, they note the 533mhz chips are due out soon and will help bridge the FPU gap between the PIV and the PM. These chips will use 27W of power.

Wow.. if that's right, you can subtract off about 30 or so watts under load if you use a ATI9600 or something close:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... rcons.html
Plus 5W for a notebook drive. That would mean a total load around 80-85W for 3500+ performance!

Any idea where I can get a cheap 2.5" -> 2.5" IDE cable converter?
