The absolute performance is only relevant if you're using the same CPU as the one under test (Intel Core i7 965). If you're using a less power hungry CPU, the result will be far better. Compare these numbers with those from silentpcreview's previous test setup, for example.

The standard for fan controllers is a 3-pin connector with 12V, ground, and speed (or 4-pins for PWM). Fans that come with 4-pin molex connectors are intended to be plugged into power supplies. It makes no difference which ground wire they use.

Yes, I have no idea why this is. It could be my Aerocool F6XT is the bad apple as it uses: 12Volt - Ground - Nothing - Nothing. To me, this makes sense if you are only going to do a 2 pin rheobus controller, right? I mean It kinda makes sense. I am learning that fan molex connector is different tha...

I like ntavlas's suggestion of a bottom fan. Another idea is to place a divider between the CPU and graphics card, so the intake and exhaust fans work in parallel rather than in series.

Presumably the small one is for a low power version (Sandy Bridge starts at only 35W). Instead of giving the customer better cooling, they instead shave a couple dollars of cost.

Another data point in this argument is the Antec 3480. This IS an ideal case for a fanless PSU - why ? - because the top compartment has a top ventilation grill (designed for the original Antec PSU.) Agreed. A passive power supply in that case is truly passive, not stealing system fan airflow. But ...

It's an interesting tradeoff between spending money on a flash cache and adding to system RAM. System RAM can be used as a cache, much faster than flash, but doesn't survive (non-hibernate) power cycles / reboots.

PWM signal splitting using 4-pin & 3-pin motherboard

What's the easiest way to connect two PWM fans to two motherboard fan connectors, one 4-pin and one 3-pin, with the PWM control in common (seperate power and monitor)? My first thought was to use two standard PWM fan splitters, cutting unwanted wires and solder splicing, as needed. But perhaps there...

that's a really strange request. I am trying to envision a need for that. I can't. why do you need it? If you're using a fan with extreme undervolting, down to 4V say, then the fan may not spin up, even though it runs just fine at 4V. So every time you power cycle the system, you have to remember t...

It's confusing because I understood that IPS panels have higher response times than TN ones, so are more likely to have this problem if that's what causes it. I can only guess that an IPS panel with a 5ms response time might have a better BTW/WTB time than a TN panel with a 5ms response time. Or el...

The Pentium Pro was the last Intel CPU to use a fixed voltage (3.3V). Starting with the Pentium II the motherboard is responsible for the CPU power supply. Originally motherboards used 5V as a source, later 12V. Ideally the PC power supply should transition to 12V only.

I woke up from a nap today with a startling revelation. I will share it with you, free of charge. The width of a 5.25" drive is 5.75". The width of a 3.5" drive is 4". The "drive size" refers to the width of FLOPPY DISKS - not drives! 2.5" drives are 2.75" wide. What does the 2.5" refer to? Good que...

I like "legacy" interfaces. There's something cool about being able to use a new peripheral with an old computer, or vice versa. I like the fact that the PC world doesn't have a Steve Jobs type dictator who can impose his idea of progress by stamping out anything old or inelegant.

Isn't it a problem that 5V is below the minimum start voltage for most fans? Not that it won't usually work, but it's out of spec and may not be 100% reliable.
