Re: Top vs. bottom mounted PSU.

Top mounting allows for a smaller case and shorter power cables. But the power supply should have its own air chamber (like NSK3480). Note that with a (semi)-fanless power supply, top mounting may result in the power supply being an air intake. Although the power supply works fine like this, it stea...

Any 180mm tall heat sinks?

I'm curious if there are any CPU heat sinks on the market that can take advantage of an extra wide case (one with a 140mm exhaust fan instead of the usual 120mm) - such as the Fractal Define XL, for example.

Let me get this straight, you are getting all excited about an anonymous edit to a Wikipedia article? And the fact that it was deleted (just like any other nonsense) somehow makes it more trustworthy?

These days? Nothing has changed recently. Peak power has plateaued, but not decreased. Maybe idle power is a little lower. HDs aren't major power hogs in modern systems so SSDs don't change anything.

The cost per bit advantage of hard drives over flash has narrowed some in recent years, but it's still enormous. And that trend is not guaranteed to continue. Hard drives makers are working on new technologies, and flash could hit a wall.

It's probably the slot for HP's remote management card.

The traditional standard depth for an ATX power supply is 140mm, and some cases (especially old or custom) support no larger. The Seasonic is 160mm.

I'd like to see more motherboards with on-board power supplies (external DC). That would increase the value for silent PCs since you wouldn't need to add a picopsu or whatever.

I can see that ISPs want to charge for the traffic, since it differs a lot between users. Some really use up lots of their theoretical maximum, while most users just need to download a little every now and then. Why should infrequent users have to pay the same as the heavy users? With differentiati...

One other question: is there any significance to the relative speeds of the CPU fan and case fan, or is this just an accidental consequence of using two different fan models? Would it be any better or worse to run them at the same speed?

Re: Silent Mid Gaming PC Build Guide

The article left me confused about what fans were used. The case comes with a 200mm top fan and a couple 120mm front fans, but they aren't mentioned. The article states that six fans are used - I count only five mentioned in the article (1 case, 1 CPU, 2 graphics, 1 power supply).

Display a 1-pixel black/white checkerboard pattern and then select the monitor's "auto sync" option, if it has one.

All the 120Hz monitors so far use low quality TN panels. So motion is better, but then you have the ugly TN vertical color shift.

Re: Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus GPU Cooler

Maybe instead of making longer cards, a better way would be a short card covering 6 slots, using a "tower" style heat sink, blowing the hot air out the back. 6 slots is 0.8*6*25.4 = 122mm. One slot for connectors, 5 for exhaust.

Re: Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus GPU Cooler

[Edit]Oh, and there is a standard for long card support( really long cards, you'd have to extend well past the Accelero). The old Antec Dragon cases used to include support brackets for them in the front of the case, but I haven't seen them in years. You can see them as part #20 in the case's PDF ....

Re: PCI-E x16-capable card in a PCI-E x4 slot okay?

A standard x4 slot (not open at the end) won't physically accept a x16 card. This is because the x16 cards are allowed to take more power, so a motherboard with x16-compatible slots would have to be able to supply more total power. Are you sure about that? Like I said earlier, from a quick look at ...

I was looking at the picopsu products and didn't see a mounting plate for an ATX case, only an expansion slot mount. For people using the picopsu in an ATX case, did you make your own plate? Or just cover the hole with something?

If performance is truly a non-issue, use an ancient PCI (not PCIe) card. If the graphics chip doesn't have a heat sink on it, you know it's low power by today's standards.

For a power supply to be cooled passively, the case should be vented on top and there should be no air path between the system fan and the power supply. Example:
