The primary noise is from fans. this is debatable; okay, modern 3.5" and 2.5" HDD have come a long way in terms of quietness, It's always possible to encase HDD's, use solidstate or remote drives to remove that source. There is another reason to avoid fans in quiet systems... In accoustics or elect...

I can only speak from the experience of my 'silent' pc, but once you've heard (or rather not heard) a really quiet machine it's hard to compromise and add even a single fan;- While I was experimenting with the p4 version of my machine, I tried adding an 80mm fan ticking over at <5v . It was clearly ...

=> Don't even bother with a single heatsink...Maybe have 4x heatsinks and heatpipes? You can use a single heatsink, if you choose one optimised for point source use: e.g. http://www.aavidthermalloy.com/cgi-bin/euro_exdisp.pl?Pnum=0000D&LengthUnits=mm&ExLength=150.00&TReff=0.411 [This is only an exa...

ok, so, you've 95 watts to get rid of, at less than 71'c at the source. Assume 30'c ambient inside the case, you need to dissipate 94w with less than 41'c drop 41/94 = 0.43 K/w absolute maximum between the cpu and the air. this has to include the thermal resistance of each interface, the heat-sink i...

First ,you need to get a grasp of the science involved in this. For instance: What about the loss of efficiency caused by having a heatpipe between the CPU and large heatsink There is no loss of efficiency, there is just additional thermal resistance (and, with heat pipes, an upper thermal limit) (T...

3.4W idle, 33.4W load. A Fanless Ninja or Orochi is sufficient i think. That's about the same power output level as the 1GHz P3 in my silentPC project, so I think it's possible. I used a 1K/W industrial heatsink, since it is better suited to fanless operation than most PC CPU heat-sinks. If the Nin...

Very nice looking case :) The grill might look better if you routered out a rebate on the inside, so the grill is closer to the out-side of the box. This should give the impression that the box is made of thinner, sleaker, material. I did the same to the top panel of my PVR box. The top is actually ...

  :o :P The author doesn't mention whether this thing makes any noise, and/or if it makes ozone? Well, it will be devoid of mechanical noise and vibration. The only noise it should produce is from turbulence, the author doesn't state any estimate of flow rate, but I guess it would onl...

Here we go again.... 0dB is simply a ratio of 1:1 [Mod: a ratio of what to what?] [edit:] A ratio of any number (usually representing signal power or level) to another. Bels are a useful means of scaling a number with huge range into something easier to handle (e.g. 0 to 12Bels = 1 to 1,000,000). To...

But if you leak water on your computer components you are screwed. Oh yes:), the water starts off non-conducting, but as contaminants disolve into it, it starts to conduct so, if the machine is powered, eletrolosys will rapidly destroy the board! Non-conductive cooling fluids are designed so that a...

a non-conductive water cooling fluid like Fluid XP+ Ultra or something? Hmmm, water, pure water, is non-conductive. Re: Variant "Homebrew" Hard Drive Enclosure
http://www.silentpcreview.com/files/images/alleycat/index.html My idea starts with this SPCR member's concept of gel-packs cushioning the drive inside an enclosure which I will then suspend in the case. Here's what I'm thinking. I want to use some heat-sealable anti-static bags. I was thinking of m...

I thought you might like to see a interesting fan design that I found in a Sony LCD back-projection TV. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bill_todd/test/fan1.jpg I was impressed how quiet it was and how much air it moved while running at full speed. Isolator Impacts on Seek Settling "The major problem created when mounting a drive on isolators is the additional motion in the drive’s baseplate at seek settle. This condition is commonly called the wind-up mode. The isolators are springs that allow the drive’s baseplate to rotate when the tor...

If you already have the heatsink and all you want to do is a few basic cuts, don't get it CNC'ed, just cut it with a hacksaw. Initially it looks like you are dividing the heat-sink into six parts, but you have a confusing/misleading vertical red line that only partially bisects the part. There are large white rectangles which are presumably hidden detail (...

I have to say the idea of using a gel pack to reduce impact damage never occured to me. Indeed, the incompressible nature of liquids and gels would seem to rule them of for this purpose. Sony seem to have designed a wrap-around shock-absorber/damper for HDDs. It will be interesting to see how they'v...

I'm not sure if I can explain it correctly......but the case gets plenty of airflow at low noise levels, but not the sort of ideal airflow that cools CPU heatsinks very well. If the heatsink were taller, and closer to the big fan.......I don't think the 92mm fan would be necessary (assuming the sam...

I'm with Rusty on this one. One option I was considering was to use a large peltier device to raise the relatively cool temperature of a water cooled PC to the higher temperature of a Domestic Hot Water tank. Here, the inefficiency of the peltier pump simply adds to the heating of your DHW (if the D...
