Re: New PC for my father

It's a solid build. I think your dad is right keeping the GPU. He probably has the PC running less than 3 hours a day anyway. And the difference between Intel's HD4000 and a 5670 should be substantial. A bigger SSD is only necessary if he really needs more space. A lower spec SB/IB Celeron or Pentiu...

Re: Nexus Value 430 PSU in Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E?

The Nexus will work just as well as any other 120mm fan PSU. Placing them upside down doesn't matter at all.

Seeing as Amazon also has a sale on the Seasonic G-Series I'd still recommend this one. Just for being newer and 80 Plus Gold certified.

Re: Nexus Value 430 PSU in Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E?

Is the Nexus Value even in stock anywhere anymore? This is an ancient PSU. SPCR reviewed it very late. I remember a friend of mine used it in a build around 2003 or 2004. Contemporary alternatives would be the Seasonic G-Series or the Superflow Golden Greens. If you think about it, the Value 430 rea...

The best heatsink for low noise out there is the Thermalright HR-02 Macho. With low airflow (=low noise), none cools better.

Re: Need suggestions for Silent MiniITX case

The Node 304 and the SG08 are very similar. The SG08 is a bit smaller in all directions and has an optical drive. The Node can house a tower-cooler, provides a little front airflow and, most important to me, doesn't charge good money for a substandard PSU. The SG08's non-modular Bronze PSU comes dow...

Re: Need suggestions for Silent MiniITX case

The Node 304 is an awesome case, I think. It follows the internal layout of Silverstone's SG07/08, but can be equipped with a good tower heatsink out of the box. The best PSU would be the Silverstone SST-ST55F-G, the shortest modular PSU out there. But this combination would break your budget. Apart...

Re: Open vs closed graphics card for TJ08-e

1) I would get a custom-cooler GPU, like the Asus DCUII or Gigabyte whatever. 2) There won't be a hot pocket in the case ceiling. The big 180mm fan, no matter if intake (standard) or outtake (my proposition, see below) should create enough airflow to prevent this. 3) I would flip the front fan in th...

Our psychology does not justify or change the fact that procreation is delivering children into harm and death. We're also delivering children into joy and life. Please explain why you think this topic is "non-sense". Because a great deal of people are not finding life all that depressing, but enjoying it. At the same airflow.

The DCU-II has a larger heatsink and more fan "area", because of this it very likely that it will need less airflow and thus be quieter.

Shouldn't you be enjoying your childless freedom, your money, your lack of responsibility, your partner's full attention?

Or is the suffering of your unrequested life making you come here to try to make others miserable too?

Silverstone also sells the PS07, which is the TJ08-E with a different (uglier) front panel and 2x 120mm fans in the front instead of the 180mm. There are quite a few alternative 180mm fans as well, some 200mm fans with 180mm mounting holes might also fit. There is no reliable information as to how q...

You could go Mini ITX with a Silverstone SG08, for example. Or a Lian Li Q08, Q11 or Q18. They have the same "PSU above the CPU"-issue that the SG03 has. I had the SG04 and didn't like that setup very much. The best Micro-ATX case is Silverstone's TJ08-E. (though I preferred the predecessor without ...

It's unusual that a system with a fan is so quiet. But i've heard that one can't even hear the fan when one's ear is against it. My wife has the 2010 model (Core 2 Duo) and I recently bought the 2012 model (Ivy Bridge). Both 11" models. The 2010 model is very quiet. Idling, surfing the web, watchin...

Re: Advice for a Mini Gaming Rig

The TJ08 is the smallest case that fits a 3-slot-card and a tower-cooler. It is significantly smaller than a regular mATX-case, more than the 7-8 cm less height and width might suggest. It's not shoe-box-sized though.

The best mATX case for me is the Silverstone TJ08 without the -E. It is no longer being sold, but maybe found on ebay. The TJ08-E has a 180mm fan in front that is not silent, from what I've heard. Silverstone sells this case with a different front as the PS07, this has 2x 120mm fans in the front. I'...

If you're going ITX, your biggest problem is the GTX580 with the Accelero Xtreme - a 3-slot-solution, if I'm not mistaken. There are not many ITX-cases that can take a 3-slot-cards. The only ones that come to my mind are the Lian Li Q11, Q18 and Q25. The Q11 cannot take a card of the length of the 5...

Is there a particular reason for RAID? RAID is not backup - data loss is more often the result of filesystem actions (corruption, viruses, accidental deletion) than disk failure. So unless your wife's PC activities are uptime critical - and they don't sound like it - you'd be better off putting that...

I haven't used my optical drive in ages. And I support abandoning them on mobile devices to make room for more battery. Also: even if Windows really needed disks more than OSX, which I don't agree with, one shouldn't expect Apple to consider this in their decisions. On an iMac, there would probably ...
