Hi Peterson, thanks for the nice reply! :) If you look at the picture with the new fan mounted, you can see the parts where you put the fan screws is lower than the rest of the PSU casing. So if I had used stick type fan mounts the frame of fan would still touch the metal casing. I thought about usi...

Felger... Yes I forgot that, good point. Now it seems just like all the other nonsense without meaning posted on SPCR time to time. I swapped the the original fan out of there, because... - The noise signature for the fan was not very pleasant - It was a high speed fan that created a bit too much no...

Hi qviri, you're right, that would have been a perfect idea. Just realised that... My original plan was to use a proper drill and movable drill bench at work to carve the front plate so, that I would have ended up with just a thin frame. However I realised that the bench would have probably inf...

SU430 (NSK6500 PSU) fan swap [56k]

Hello, instead of clogging up the PSU modding sticky I decided to post this in its own thread (although this will be linked to the sticky). I did a fan swap for the PSU that came with the NSK6500. It's a 430W version of the PSU shown in the SPCR review of the Antec NSK2400. EDIT: I kept talking abou...

Jaganath... that is a surprising question from a person who has taken part in various fan, blade design etc discussions, but to put it shortly: an enclosure creates a certain resistance to an airflow, so fans need pressure capability to work with the enclosure resistance. And got confirmation, the S...

The Noctua fan is not even remotely aerodynamically correct. Yes, it works in free air, but it is USELESS in an enclosure.

Hi guys, Felger, the NMB is not really a new fan. Scythe just bought some surplus (that's actually just a guess, but having information about the NMB-MAT valueline production schedules on the particular spec it seems they are surplus) and are selling them in their Scythe labeled plastic bags. Minebe...

Hi Peter, what's the code on the fan label? 1BX, 1A, 1AJ etc? Only 1BX has the tacho (IIRC), the others mean the third wire (yellow) is either locked rotor, possible locked rotor or not used. Although, I've had a surplus 80L1BX from Germany which is supposed to have tacho, but didn't work (gee, wond...

However, the question for us is whether all 120x25mm fans with 7 blades have the same rpm-to-airflow relationship. In other words, does every 120x25mm fan with 7 blades have the same airflow at 500, 1000 and 2000 rpm? No, not between different fans. You have to consider both airflow and pressure. B...

Hi,

one option is to remove the original face plate of the DVD drive and use double sided tape or similar to slap on the actual Solo bay cover.

Google for "stealth CD plate" or similar and you'll get the idea. I also used this technique with my HTPC (in my sig).

Antec Basiq, any info?

Hi guys,

browsing at the Antec website I took a closer look at the Antec Basiq power supplies. Anyone have any experiences with these?

Definately looks like a rebadged Fortron (80mm HLC series)

Hi darthan and thanks for the reply. I didn't even realise the power dissipation is THAT low with Cool N Quiet. Interesting. Probably looking at the 3800+ X2 then. Hi guys and girls, well, it's that time of the decade. I'm finally getting a new comp :) Been browsing SPCR forums and some reviews in order to get parts together, the main problem is the processor. Altitude doesn't affect a fan's rotational speed in anyway. A fan spins according to a certain frequency, defined by it's electronics. Basicly saying that is like saying "my 2.0GHz Celeron runs at 2.2GHz by itself when I take it to higher altitude". Altitude doesn't affect a fan's airflow in anyway....

The RPM monitoring is the difference. However, I really don't agree with GHz, that's quite a generalisation. Yes, the tacho monitoring usually adds noise, but it can range from non-existent to unpleasant. With Panaflos it depends on how the RPM is monitored, does the fan have a hall-sensor or does i...

MikeC, few words about the bearing... the term Fluid Dynamic Bearing seems to be used quiet loosely these days. Wonder why...? The key to making a FDB work properly is precision. Felger, I probably should have been clearer. Tacho has nothing to do with the type of switching. As a general rule the FB fans have soft edge switching, with or without tacho. You're using a specific manufacturer's specific models as a basis for explaining how tacho works, sounds and what kind of switching it forces? I would understand that (well, not actually, but lets pretend I would) but on top of that, you didn't get what Dorothy wrote. All Panaflo FB fans use soft ed...

Japan made Panaflos are not made anymore. There is nothing wrong with China made Panaflos. That is simply not true. The problem is you're buying surplus stock. I have a funny feeling the OP is either finnish or swedish. That soundproofing mat is from Biltema (I think the HTPC link in my sig has some info about it) which is good, but doesn't come with glue pre-installed. However you've done a pretty nice job with it.

No it's not the type of FDB they use with HDDs. The Sony FDB (made for Sony AFAIK) is not like the Panaflo FDB (Panaflo and Minebea invented it and patented it, both in hard drives and fans). Proper FDB requires precision (Panaflo FDB precision is <50 atoms IIRC) and this is something only NMB-MAT (...

If you believe the picture, the model is FBA0812L1J and it was made in the year 2000. It can be either what Moritz explained, or it can directly effect the switching electronics. Similar to the thermistor in the Globe fans (apparently).

An individual PWM circuit is out simply due to the cost, also altering the coil windings is usually not the easiest way of doing.
