Re: HDPLEX H1-S and ASRock mini-ITX

Hi Vicotnik. Coming back to C States issue, can you just check in Asrock BIOS whether you indeed set C6 State and C7 State to "enable" instead of "Auto" and compare power consumption? I'm curious to know the difference.

Re: HDPLEX H1-S and ASRock mini-ITX

Moving from Intel DH77DF and i3-3225 to ASRock B85M-ITX and i3-4330, idle power consumption went from 13.5W to 13.9W AC. Thanks for your experiments shedding lights into low-power ITX systems. However, I just can't seem to understand why the "idle" power consumption increased from 13.5W (Ivy Bridge...

Re: Quiet Developer Build

So far as I remember, you are the first in this forum who justifies the use of i7 so eloquently. I definitely think you should purchase i7 CPU. From the beginning, it might be helpful to concede that (in contrast to our intuition) it is really challenging to settle with a concrete rig configuration ...

Who makes a good stable SSD that plays nicely with Linux and Windows? If you research about SSD, it will become clear that the sweet-spots are those made by Samsung. I have used Intel SSD's due to my disliking to Samsung. I can attest to the stability of Intel SSDs. Having said that, unless you are...

Hi, Though I haven't used Scorpio Black ever, I highly suspect two of them will be the noisiest parts in your new rig. Most of the time, graphics cards are the noisiest components, which are absent in your list, and the second noisiest ones are usually PSUs and HDDs. In other words, as long as you u...

I think I can surely resist this temptation. At the same time, it strikes me that they are likely to postpone 20nm graphics cards in order not to cannibalise themselves, which is a bad news. I don't think I will be able to resist what they can deliver with 20nm.

This is a ground-shattering achievement by Nvidia, all the more because the additional enhancement to be brought about by 20nm has not even materialized. I have long been thinking that 100W-200W TDP is utterly too much for casual-gamers with keen interest in quiet PC. Unfortunately, this unprecedent...

This is too good to be true. Can anyone enlighten me as to how 150W TDP graphics card can be passively cooled without a gigantic heatsink? The heatsink does not look impressive. I have tinkered with a number of aftermarket GPU coolers and my rule of thumb is that the maximum TDP that can be passivel...

Where the CPU with box cooler maxes out at 64C with Rift, Mugen 4 drops it to 45C. The Gfx card maxes out at 61C and the fan is still down around 1050 rpm. Not to be nit picky, but during the anti-spam registration the question was asked who was assassinated, MLK jr or Ghandi. I guess you will be disenchanted even with latest modern onbard graphics cards because, as far as my experience goes, they performed much worse than Nvidia GT 640, which I consider to be the minimum spec Nvidia card for gaming. By the way, I think it is a good idea to buy the latest CPU for your new...

Re: Second Seasonic Fanless 520w Platinum also buzzes/squeal

I highly suspect it is all down to acoustic acuteness. That is, most Seasonic PSUs allegedly generate high-frequency coil whining, which is not audible to all people. In fact, I sympathise those engineers working in Seasonic a little bit because Far East Asia (particularly Taiwan) is far from tranqu...

I think it's a huge joke how Asus is handling this. Even more of a joke is how SCPR describes it as "the most advanced first party fan control software". It really seems like SCPR didn't even test it and just gave it a blind stamp of approval. If the MSI had better socket placement, I'd pick one up...

As a reckless attempt to counter-balance the opinions of CA_Steve and Abula on PSU aspect, and to help you comprehend the whole landscape better, I must add that I have been tolerating constant coil whining from my Seasonic Platinum Fanless 400W (SS-400FL2) for a long time. I'm a bit skeptical about opting for a fanless NAS because (i) There are at least dozens of single-fan NAS products which are near to silence, albeit not dead silent; (ii) The overall noise generated by 3.5 inch HDDs, quite similar to airborne engine sound in my opionion, will dominate the rest of t...

FWIW, I can confirm that my GTX 650 and GTX 660 idle at very low power with low memory frequency with "dual" monitor settings. However, I recently found that GTX 660 does not idle properly at low memory frequency for "triple" monitor settings. I think the sweet spots these days are GTX 650 2GB, GTX ...

To the best of my knowledge, it is a widely known fact that CPU power consumption in the full load state does indeed linearly increases with the CPU clock frequency. In plain words, if you downlock a CPU, its power consumption in full load state accordingly decreases. My i5-4430 consumes no more tha...

I haven't read the entire thread but I once tinkered with Accelero S1 Plus on my GTX 650. It will be perhaps fine to use Accelero S1 Plus with its rather indispensable appendix, aka, Turbo Module (120mm fan) but it will be absolutely catastrophic to use it for 134W TDP graphic cards without the Turb...
