Anyone with an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium?

Could you do me a favor and take a measurement of the distance from the center of the CPU to the top edge of the motherboard? I'm trying to decide on a CPU cooler and am favoring the wider, lower profile models like the Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu or Thermalright XP-120 over the taller ones like the Scythe...

Sorry about hijacking this threa, but what, if any are the advantages of the SI-120 over the XP-120? Was the reason for the SI-120 only to give added clearance for objects on the motherboard, or were there other changes/advantages to the design?

Q-tips in a high purity rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol seem to work well. The Q-tips help in getting the paste off from around heat spreaders and other irregular surfaces. Acetone, or (I imagine) finger nail polish remover, which is usually near 100% acetone, would also work very well. If the q-tips le...

Is memory much of a consideration for an SPC?

I'm putting together a system around an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard with an Ahtlon 64 X2 4200+ CPU. I'd like 2GB of ram and was wondering whether either the amount of ram, or the voltage at which it's run makes much of a difference when it comes to cooling the system. Corsair Twinx2048-3200c2pt...

Treat the room instead of (or in addition to) the case?

Has anyone here discussed taking the approach of using room treatments to abate computer noise in addition to case damping? No matter what you _want_ to do within a case, you're severely limited by both space considerations and by the need for adequate component cooling and ventilation. Ideally, you...

My biggest problem was using heatshrink at the psu, almost burned a wire and I accidentally got the flame too close and ended up melting a bit of sleeving on another wire. What kind of blowtorch were you using? I have an oxy-acetylene cutting torch I was planning on using for the shrink tubing. I g...

It looks like NeoHe500 it is, enermax will be my next pick if the Neo somehow dosn't work... Keep us posted. I'm considering the same PSU for an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. I'm finding it tough to believe that either ASUS or Antec hasn't addressed the problem by now. They've had plenty of time to work it...

Are the other non-molex cables removed with the same type of tool? I can see removing and replacing the molex and floppy connectors, but I'm not sure I'd want to tackle the 24 pin. I honestly think I'd skip the Seasonic S12s because this lead isn't sleeved.

You do not need to remove the connectors. The sleeving material gets larger in diameter as you shorten the length and reduces in diameter as you stretch it out to normal length. It will even fit over the 24 pin mobo connectors? Also, most of the sleeved cables that I've seen have shrink tubping sec...

Sleeving power supply leads

How difficult is it to sleeve a PSU like the Seasonic S12's, should I wish to do so? I'm assuming it requires removing then replacing any end connectors on the leads that you sleeve.

Reading back over this thread, for some reason we got off track onto the subject of the value of Opterons vs. Athlons. The original question remains - How much hotter does a Toledo with 2x1MB cache run than a Manchester with 2x512MB at the same clock speed, and more importantly, would the extra cool...

Re: Recommendation for Socket 478 Board

Hey all, I'm on the market for a socket 478 board (I've already got a P4 Northwood 2.8 from my previous desktop). The cases I'm considering are either the P180 or P150 (more towards the P150 for the HD suspension, but I've already got a Zalman PS that I'd like to use). I've already got a Ninja, I'd...

170 opteron vs a 4200 dual core. I bet the opteron wins half the 4200 wins the other half. I wouldnt mess with the 165 if you game, the 170 has 2.0 ghz, kinda base amount for gaming for the future. (unless of course you OC the chip, then either work just as well) Ok, I follow the logic behind the c...

considering how you intend to use the X2, you should also look at the Opterons with 1mb L2 cache. I'd have to overclock the Opteron, or else spend big bucks to get a dual-core at 2.2GHz. Neither of which are in the plans. Edit: actually, the price difference between the 2.2GHz Opteron 175 and Athlo...

Athlon 64 X2 - Choose Manchester or Toledo?

Both are dual core, 90nm process, Athlon 64s. The Manchester core CPU has 2 x 512KB of cache, while the Toledo has 2 x 1MB. I had been planning on getting a 2.2GHz Toledo 4400+, but I'm reading that the double sized cache contributes to greater heat output. So I may go with the 2.2GHz Manchester 420...

I believe you can, but I doubt there will be much clearance, why didn't you look up the dimensions of the components? Well I know the heatsink is 136mm (5.4") in diameter, which means I'd need about 2.7" clearance from the center of the CPU to the bottom of the PSU. How exactly that works out is a ...

Non-SLI with Passive Cooling?

I'm building a system to be used for video and audio editing and encoding. It will have an AMD 64X2 4400+ CPU and 2GB RAM. I haven't decided on a video card yet, maybe a GeForce 7800GT, maybe a 6800GS, maybe even a 6600GT, since gaming won't be priority. One thing I know - I'll never use SLI with du...
