The vantec's as stated earlier are poor performers. My experience with the Silenx 120's left me soured on Silenx, although they aren't bad performers but because of the blatant marketing lies and outrageous pricing, you can get better fans for 1/4 the price. I would tend to go with the Nexus, I thin...

If it's making the image on the CRT waver it's the rotating magnetic field in the motor that's causing the problems. You can't shield against that with just metal as if it was EMI, you need something that will shield it magnetically like mu-metal. But I don't think that's going to be practical in yo...

I'd love to have you ship them. I haven't had problems with any of the 230V fans I've got running at 120. The Sunon 2123XST start and run at 80V. at 120V they do about 1200 rpm. It turns out the 230V fans are easier to work with than 120V fans because of the higher winding impedance etc. it's also e...

There is apparently no stock in the US. The best I could find was a backorder with a minimum order of 40 pieces for $450. A bit steep when you only really want 2 of them. RS's website doesn't like me for having a US postal code. They refer me to their US partner Allied Electronics, who don't carry t...

If the fan is fairly close to the screen the original fan probably did have magnetic shielding. You may have to find an alternate fan or undervolt the original. The Nexus does have a very high current draw compared to other fans of it's type, probably giving up some efficiency to quiet motor noise. ...

CCFL's have a very strange and nonlinear response and coupled with the particular driver circuit you are using their behavior when undervolted can be very individual. Just get a fanmate or something and try undervolting them and see what happens. It's very unlikely that you will damage the driver by...

I would buy another 120mm fan. A Nexus flows a decent amount of air at 12V and is very quiet at 7V so it should be able to flow enough air for your needs and also be the quietest while doing it. You will be happy with a 120mm Nexus fan. Fan grills add a little noise, but their major effect is to res...

If you can just barely hold your finger on something to a count of 5 it's roughly 70C. As an engineer, Fanless PSU's seem to me to be asking for trouble. Yes they are quiet, but you are forced to run the components very hot to make do without a fan. Even a tiny bit of airflow makes a huge difference...

Yes, the Nexus has the best airflow vs noise for a 120mm DC fan that's currently available. Vantec's are actually pretty poor. The Nexus is a 120x25mm fan. There are NO quiet 120x38mm fans, the Panaflos, Papst, and Sunons have a lot of motor noise that you can't get rid of at any speed. If you need ...

The Silenx and Nexus push similar CFM at similar RPM. The Silenx has a higher max RPM at 12V than the Nexus. The Nexus however has a lower noise vs CFM. So for any given CFM the Nexus is quieter up till it's maximum flow rate. The Nexus would be the first pick. If you need more CFM than the Nexus ca...

Sunon also seem to do a 7 blade fan (A1123/A2123 HST is the sleeve bearing variant, for 115/230V AC). Looks like it has about 25% better flow at 0.2in H2O pressure difference. I've managed to find the Sunon data sheet for all their AC fans from the internet (it's on google somewhere - can't quite r...

Noisiest Fan
Ok enough of this silent fan stuff, Please submit your nominations for Noisiest Fan below.
My entry is a 50mm axial fan taken out of some aerospace gear. 25,000 rpm - I'll leave it to you to imagine what it sounds like. It does generate some serious pressure though.

You've caught me fighting a cold so I'll just address this one point for now. On a more restrictive radiator I think the Nexus is going to lose. It already suffers about a 50% drop in airflow on the BIP II, compared to 30-35% for the 38mm thick fans. If you are really going to use a bigger core thou...

Dimmers are not usually pots, but pots controlling Triac circuits that chop the line voltage up. Unfortunately Triac circuits don't take very kindly to Inductive loads like fans and they tend to freak out, not work, or make the fan buzz loudly. You can design a triac circuit that will work, but you ...

My experience with the Silenx 120mm fans is that they are about the same performance and noise as the Globe S1202512L but with a slight bit of motor tick noise. They are not bad fans at all. They are not as good as the Nexus, but not that much worse either. They are more expensive than just about an...

A rough rule of thumb is that for free air (fan in an unrestricted system) the CFM is proportional to the RPM. Halve the RPM and you halve the CFM. As the system becomes more restricted this changes and if you halve the RPM the CFM drops by more than half. Also Fan RPM is usually fairly linearly rel...

Well I finally started measuring the airflow through a Black Ice Pro II radiator with different types of fans at different rpms. So far I've looked at the 120mm Nexus, 120mm Panaflo L1A, and the Sunon 2123xst. The fans were mounted 1" from the radiator with a standoff shroud and set up to suck throu...

Well I hope they get rid of the AC pumps the have in the 601 and 650 models. To drive the pumps in the older cases they have a power supply board that converts the 12V to 120VAC to drive the pumps. The problem is the board dissipates a lot of heat, so it takes a lot of air to cool it or it self dest...

This solution will bring you 2 problems: - Introduction of high voltage 110 or 200 AC in your case, outside of the PSU, in conjonction with watercooling................ Yes, it brings in 120V into the case like using an AC pump for water cooling does. This is not a problem if you properly insulate ...

120x38mm AC fans - the ultimate quiet 120mm fan?
This is a rewrite of a post I made on the Procooling forum. It's a summary of the things I've found out about using undervolted AC fans, which are the best, how to speed control them, how much they cost, and where to get them. In my search for quiet 120x38mm fans for a BIP II radiator in a water coo...
