Re: Is a HDD that survived ~1m fall still okay for storage
A hard drive fell out of one of my cases when I was reinstalling some drives. Time to get out the handkerchiefs folks: it was quite a sad moment . Thankfully, it was an older system drive which was non-critical and nearing retirement at the time. (I had wisely backed up the critical data on a ...

I agree it's not that bad - though I'll qualify that by noting that there do seem to be several versions of the Intel stock cooler. I have one (marked NIDEC, like yours) which I think is very good for a stock cooler even at full load on an E7200 - not something I'd use myself but good enough I'd fe...

only 1 in my system, the chip set runs abit hotter, (only about 50C) You don't have a case fan? The 7300GS produces quite a bit of heat (I have the same card), and if you don't have a case fan, there's a risk that the excess heat from your hot components such as GPU, northbridge etc, will slowly bu...

Hail, snakes, humid, storms, mold, gnats, bugs, toads... I thought Florida was a haven, a place to where old folks move when they get tired of earthquake prone areas like California? I have a wall clock in my room. If I concentrate on hearing it tick when I go to bed, there's no chance in hell that I can get some sleep. Impossible. Once I've even removed the battery from it, but could still "hear" it tick. That is very interesting. I've found some noises linger inside my head l...

It is difficult to understand why there are no reliable programs to read TJ Max, it is a value set in a register by Intel at the time of the chip's manufacture. It is a simple matter to write a program in assembler that will read the register. I tend to trust CoreTemp. It seems T-junction is neithe...

Hmmm . . . I have to think about this data for a while, and check up on some stuff that I have long forgotten...will get back in a day or so. Are your CPU Thermal Monitor 2 and EIST turned on in the BIOS? If they are, then your CPU should either throttle down or fully shut down if it gets too close...

Re: Corsair H5 vs Scythe Ninja mini FANLESS
I'm trying to make my htpc totally fanless (for crazy audiophile reasons, not because i cant stand 25dB of noise). I just heard about the H5 and saw some tests. It seems a good candidate to replace my ninja mini, which with hot summers here needs a fan. I have it engaged with an A-tech sensor. The ...

*Major update* So I took a spare HD and installed W2K on it. Downloaded Orthos (newest version), Real temp (version 2.5 and 3.00), HWmonitor (newest version) and Core Temp. I'm still not comfortable with just assuming that your software is misreading your temps unless you can get some direct reading from the side of the IHS or the side of the bottom of the Minja to provide better data. God forbid something is actually wrong and your software is reporting accurate temp...

Perhaps I got it all wrong but I thought OEM is the only way to go if you want to install W7 on a system that has been wiped clean (XP in my case). For example, komplett.se only sells OEM discs of XP's. No, you can also use retail, and you want to. An OEM version will be locked to your motherboard,...

Yes it is little confusing. But if I buy W7, I'll have to fetch the OEM version which will probably cost an arm & leg. WHAT? Why do you need the OEM version, why not the retail? From what I've gathered, upgrades are not possible if you have XP. I think it is, I've seen discussions about this, howev...

What you wrote was from the same link, but still very confusing since the actual prices are there. Yes, €50 is equal to $70, but this time they're not comparable since the NA version is an upgrade version. A retail copy have never been this cheap, XP started at $199/299, and Vista $239/299. Yes, ...

new2spcr: The good thing is that W7 will not be able as upgrade versions at first in EU, only retail versions for upgrade prices during the preorder period. If you're plan to buy it at all you might as well do it now, or never. Later on it will cost more, or you'll end up with a upgrade version for...

I've seen the reviews and talked to people who have tested it, and while it does sound much more user friendly for those that aren't so tech savvy, i on the other hand already know Win XP pro inside and out. For me, the only thing I've seen that Win 7 will be able to do that XP cant is SSD optimiza...

Monkeh16, thanks. Lodehacker, I don't know. I used to think the highest temp was the CPU. When I checked the BIOS to make sure, I was surprised to see it was the lowest. CPU core temps match those reported by the motherboard sensors. Maybe the air in the case is cooler than the motherboard... My ca...

The temperatures you are getting seem high at idle but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. You won't fry anything at those temps. CPUs can take 50°C all day long, all year long. I certainly wouldn't spend money on a new heatsink, much less a new CPU. I have more than a decade of experience with overclo...

. . . I'm inclined to conclude that there's nothing wrong with neither the IHS or HSF hardware. It gotta be a calibration problem. So far, the data seems to point in that direction. But, I would be very careful and try to find a way to verify with direct readings of the temp of the IHS or something...

I'm beginning to believe the thermal diodes aren't either calibrated or the analog -> digital conversion is giving off digits. And /or the lm_sensors in Linux aren't giving the correct values. Or a mix of all three? Quote: "(C) Tcase and Tjunction are both acquired from Thermal Diodes. Tcase and Tju...
