hanks for the useful information, but it seems lie if you don't already have great 140mm fans the thermalright setup is worth paying a premium for to get the fans.

Re: News for 2011-02-23
sorry for being a little too snarky. I am actually currently running a A64 X2 and am going to migrate to SB. If you are running multi-threaded applications the argument for X6 is strong, but they seem to be advocating X6 chips for serious gaming rigs. AFAIK games don't really benefit much from multi...

runs at 75°C, a bit high maybe, but no signs of trouble yet 75c is perfectly acceptable for a GPU, most of them run around this temp with their stock coolers. The problem with a fanless setup is that the VRM area doesn't get any forced ventilation. So the MOSFETs could be running very high. Their t...

Re: Help plan a NAS with aspirations...
my advice to you would be use the term "NASpirations" :) Sounds like you'll only need 2TB for a while. Is there a compelling reason not to just set up a redundant RAID on your main system and run it 24/7? My guess its it would save energy and redundant parts. Also don't forget to buy an additional 2...

does it make sense to hook up a 120mm intake case fan up to the PWN terminal of the graphics card? are there store bought adapters or is it a home brew project? Also if you add a case fan you might want to make a duct that will send all of the air under the card where the cooler is and not the half ...

copying designs is great for the consumers. it keeps performance high and costs low. Imagine if you had one company manufacturing heat pipe tower style heatsinks? They could easily charge $75 and not spend much effort improving on their design. instead we have lots of tower heatsinks from $25-90 wit...

Re: Cheap Acoustic Foam
Do not do it. It is bituminous felt, which is not that great for your health to mess with. It is very heavy, a good panel dampener. If you feel compelled to add acoustic damping, a layer of high density foam atop the bituminous felt is all you need. what material(s) at what thicknesses do you think...

Re: Cheap Acoustic Foam
is there a way we can test foams noise proofing properties? like build a 6"x6"x6" box and put a speaker in it with full frequency white noise and measure what comes out? it looks like the highest density (pounds per cubic foot) products they have are (in order of cost) Multi/Rebounded-Mixed Foam(6),...

Re: Cheap Acoustic Foam
we need more dense foams to deal with the lower frequency sounds that the fans and hard drives create. Foam For You sells Volara as well. In fact, they'll add a layer of it to any foam you buy for an extra $1/sq. foot. Beyond that, various fan noises can most certainly range beyond just low frequen...

Re: 5dBA 120mm Fan.
This is fascinating thanks for everyone for posting. could it be that this experiment explains mike's 6 year old results? Maybe the baseline noise of a room makes it seem that extremely quiet fans seem to not add 3db when doubled, but you can only detect the 3db bump when the fans are loud enough to...

I read this and enjoyed it. I didn't comment. I don't understand how this has become so contentious. I haven't really rad the back and forth. Re: Needing to Build a Quiet Digital Audio Workstation!
Because of the Sandy Bridge Architecture, the overclocking probably doesn't affect the idle that much, maybe not at all. Maybe it changes the idle from 5 watts to 6 watts, unless you go really nuts with it. We may not know the answer for a while becuase the people who measure idle watts aren't gene...

But I challenge anyone to provide an objective rational as to why one would have a need to overclock a 2600K to do something it couldn't do without the overclock. Just one thing. What can a 2600K do that a first generation Core 2 Duo can't do? If you find the answer to that, you know what overclock...

Re: Needing to Build a Quiet Digital Audio Workstation!
If you skip the high powered graphics card you DO NOT need 800 watts. the most power hungry modern hard drives peak power consumption is about 10-12 watts. you will be fine with 400 watts, and could probably get by with half (but don't). Two great options are the nexus value 430 for $75 which is ind...

Re: What I have Learned about Computer Performance from SPCR
Thoughts one graphics cards: ATI has been lowering the idle power consumption of their lower end cards to 6watts and their performance cards to under 20 watts. when they are under load they can be cooled by a PWN cfan and since 99.9% of 3d games have sound we can achieve silence. i think high power ...

If it can fit those two 140mm fans why not have the heatsink extend out another inch and a half. If it can fit the fans it can fit the heat sink. http://www.techpowerup.com/img/11-02-15/60d.jpg I feel like two 120mm fans would be more effective because 100% of the air would go through the heat sink ...
