intel statements about p-m in desktop
Planet3dnow invited a press man form Intel Germany for their theme-afternoon. Here are some snippets that are might be interesting: Intel showed a modest priced fanless P4 3Ghz design-study on IDF. It would be best if less heat is produced. Intel ist working hard on this.... Even today the semincond...

I found a simple solution for my problem. My mobo/bios has nothing against a "dead" device on the IDE bus. So when I want to use the drive under windows I switch +5V/12V on for this drive (ground already connected) an run hardware detection from windows. For switching of you simply need to deinstall...

1. Lowered frequency due to thermal limits reached. 2. Lower frequency when CPU is idling a lot. This is often refered to as speedstep technology or similar. Exists in almost 100% of laptops, but is very rare in desktops. 3. vCool etc that issues HALT command etc to the processor when idle I guess ...

My goold old Palomino also allows passive cooling while office work with vcool enabled. I hope there is also some good HLT mode implemented in the Hammer. This is more important than Cool and Qiet. But apart from this i like the idea. Since smaller manufacturing processes are resulting higher and hi...

tool for shutting down harddisk under windows
Sometimes i hate windows. with linux it's very easy with hdparm. Under Windows there is no function provided to shutdown a harddisk immediatelly. So we need tools. I already tried HdSleep and Symbios SCSI Tools. But they do not work. Do you have any sucessfull tool for W2k/XP? ftp://ftp.eunet.cz/pub...

idle power reduction - MikeC?
Does anybody of you know if Nvidia or ATI plan to reduce the power needed during non-3d applications?
As a simple customer I am shure that both won't listen to me.

It doesn't matter if he's running AMD, Intel, Via, Spark, etc, etc, if his wall outlet is only putting out 200W he's only using 200W. Uhh you missed my point. Wumpus uses a P4 system. His PSU only can deliver 18A @ 12V = 216W. On a 865/875 systems with Geforce FX5600 70% of the power goes through t...

cmcquistion, I liked your 2nd article. I would recommend it to newbies to silent computing as a good entrance point. Your method of decoupling hdd's was new to me. You only recommend what you have tried. If somebody comes and say "this one is better" you don't have to listen because you haven't trie...

[...]So that 180w from the wall, assuming an awfully optimistic 75% efficiency rating on the Enermax 365, is really only providing 135w of actual power to the components inside the Dual AMD system (at 100% load!) Heck, even my overvolted/overclocked P4 3.2c system I am typing this on, only draws 25...

However, isn´t the whole idea of the BTX-form that the air goes straight in to the cpu, therefrom to the GPU and then out the back (with small exception of the air cooling the memory and PSU), which will guarantee that cool air always hits the GPU-fan I don't like the idea of heating up the case wi...

I will bring some light into this topic. There are 3 processors intended for mobile use: ------- Pentium - M -- new design, needs special chipset, only available as ITX mobo for desktop use, yet ------ The following two are compatible with the Pentium 4. You can put them on every motherboard. Of cou...
