I think I'm gonna go with a 9600 pro; it does cost more, but only against the 64 mb 4200, and it should be more futureproof.

I don't care about cooler, I'll just be sticking on a waterblock anyways.

Help me pick a video card

Okay, first, I'm not actually worried about the noise of the stock cooling. Stock cooling is way to unleet... Anyways, I killed my GeForce3 Ti200. I want to order a new card today or tomorrow. I do play games a lot (Wolfenstein ET, BF1942, UT2003, to name a few). I'm not too concerned about video qu...

I think this idea could be adjusted on a large scale to heat my driveway. I hate shovelling snow. How many folding PC's would it take to melt 6 inches of snow over 500 sq feet? Hmm, thats an interesting question. Considerably more interesting than my homework here... I'll get back to you on that as...

Theres a review of that heatsink at www.dansdata.com, you should probably look at at that. As for its value over a minimum speed Zalman, that depends on how sensitive you are to the noise. For the hard drive, I beleive the samsung spin point drives are quieter, there's a review in the storage sectio...

Try it and tell us. Depends on the forums... but I'd say yes. I hope not. Most definately not.

Most kits tend to do pretty poorly. A properly designed watercooler, such as my set up, can be nearly to completely silent, while being heavily overclocked. The problem of course is cost; I've spent at least $400 on my cooler set up, not even counting the case ($150) I'm fitting it in, and the dreme...

I'll second sbabb's suggestion- with long tubes, you could have the pump/radiator in a different room, and really dampen a watercooled drive.

Or, another route- put the whole computer in a different room, with good KVM cables running to your work room.

Re: Ralf clone (first quiet PC) is complete!

Injuries: 0 cuts grrr. I'm getting a new case today, YY-0221. I'm going to have to buy a dremel tool for it tomorrow if I can find a bus that goes to a hardware store, or a 4 mile bike ride if absolutely neccessary, and I expect to lose at least one finger once I get started. As for the 5 blade pan...

not for quite a lot of time. There was an article posted in here earlier... in it, it said they've got 100,000 computers folding at any one time, but some proteins they'd like to fold will require ten times more power.

yeah, you've got the efficiency right there.

For DC efficiency, you have to know the DC load, either through a tester like MikeC has or the camp ammeter he mentioned.

waterblock is too small, and not optimized for heat dissipation. Copper pipes across most of the side panel can be somewhat effective though.

Base thickness in a heat sink is a compromise issue. For any given metal, a given thickness can only conduct so much heat per unit of time. If the base isn't thick enough, it can't carry enough heat from the source to the fins fast enough to cool the source effectively, and you end up with a hot so...

There was a post about it a while back...

The thing to note is that these processors are at the high end of the voltage options; once a 90nm process is released voltage and power consumption will drop considerably.

Still, I am surprised by how much they consume.

Actually the 8dra+ does not have the extra 12v ATX connector. Which means most of that CPU draw is probably on the 5 volt. My 19" has a pretty huge degauss spike (I think it broke 250) but it averages around 80 or 90 watts I think.

As for vcore.. I'm probably going to have to break at least 2 volts for 2.5 ghz.

Overclocking Power draw

I just got a kill-a-watt the other day, so today I decided to plug it in and get some numbers... I'm running an Epox 8rda+, t-bred b (clock speeds below) Maxtor DM9+, and a geforce 3 ti200 (overclocked a bit). I ran two tests; one full CPU load and one no load. I'll try more things later (like drive...

Basically, the only thing aluminum cases have is better design thanks to their target group.

Aluminum is a considerably better conductor than steel, but the only hot thing the aluminum actually touches is the hard drives; even then it doesn't do them much good.
