I've got a WHS based on a Gigabyte G41M-ES2L, E5200, 4 gig of RAM and EA380 PS. With only the main drive (HITACHI HD31000, 1TB 7200 RPM) spinning it draws 40w. The 2nd storage drive is the same 2TB Samsung drive. (The Samsung drives only draw 4w@idle, and are very quiet.) It's not hard building good...

On a Gigabyte MB that setting has nothing to do with the RAM timing settings (those are found in the Memory settings). I've yet to run into a situation where if the memory and CPU were run at rated speed the Enhanced setting didn't work fine. However, the timing on the all the signals is very critic...

In my opinion, it makes more sense to use some real formulas to calculate this sort of thing:

It's better to get pointed in the right direction before doing Science Fair experiments.

Well, if dirty, dusty air is going to be passed through the cooler, then the less air the better. The fan should be under auto control so its speed is determined by the CPU temp, and the set point for the temp should be fairly high. People like to keep their CPU as cool as possible, but what is actu...

-Swith memory from dual mode to single. Did you do this by taking out a stick of RAM? Did you run the PC trying both RAM sticks, one at a time? If the CPU test crashes after 1 or 2 minutes you have a problem and it's prpbably hardware. The CPU test isn't very severe; Linpack is the heavy hitter. Try running only 1 stick of memory at a time and see if one of the sticks is stable. Check in the BIOS to see if the memory voltage is set to the r...

Perhaps the design of the loop allows for a certain amount of multiplication of the airflow from the smaller fan... Look, an electric motor converts electrical energy in to mechanical energy. The fan blades use that energy to move air. No matter what the configuration is, that's the physics. The ef...

How did SPCR determine the average consumption? Were any comparisons made to the Power Angel's KWh? The correct way to make this measurement is to run a set of various application tasks, measure the total power used and time how long it took to run the test. Average power is total power used divide...

No flaw that's how efficiency is calculated while doing work; when it's idling it's just a space heater.m0002a wrote: It seems to me that there could be a flaw in the logic here.
It's important to know the power used under those two conditions so one can evaluate the CPUs for different applications.

Re: Scythe Slipstream M - static pressure bad?
A fan that does not have high static pressure will not push, or pull that well against a high impedance, i.e., attached to a heat sink.sokre wrote:I(Slipstream shoud be good on pull).
Having said that, with a stock clocked E5200 you'd be fine with 2 800RPM Slip Streams in a push-pull configuration.

All PS's have a fan speed control circuit that is usually based on a temperature reading in the PS. The fan will almost never run at full speed unless it is under full rated load and the ambient temperature is high. The S-Flex F in my HX-520 barely spins a a few hundred RPM. The 1800 RPM GT would al...

The Slipstream uses a plain bearing and doesn't have a very long life mounted in a horizontal position. That's the reason for the S-FLEX F (1600 rpm) being recommended most often for this application. It also has a higher static pressure, which is appropriate for cooling a PS. (If I was going to rep...

Re: I/O shield panels - who uses them?
On the other hand, the CPU voltage regulators are usually in that area so it might not be a bad thing to have cold air drawn in from that direction on some motherboards. If the VRM's are really too hot, then maybe. Remember that the low pressure area will be right behind the rear case fan. Any air ...

Re: I/O shield panels - who uses them?
Got that right, and the panel is adjacent to the rear case fan. That results in a short circuit path for the air flow causing other areas in the case to get reduced air flow.shleepy wrote: That said, they also don't allow air to enter and exit...
